Unknown Extension ".uasset"

I want to unpack a .uasset file from one of my existing games, but whenever I try to import it, it says that it’s an unsupported file format.
How do I fix this issue?

You cant import uasset files! You will have to drag and drop them into your content folder

When I make assets in Maya and import them as FBx it works just fine , but when I try to get a folder of purchased assets it says it does not recognize them…
Please help

I tried dragging and dropping to the content browser and I receive an error saying the file name .uasset is not supported. Could this be due to the fact I’m using my Mac laptop? Will this cease to be the case once I get home to my windows desktop?

I have the same issue. I copied the .uasset files to the content folder of my project using Windows explorer. I also deleted the CachedAssetRegistry.bin file to force a re-population of the assets and restarted unreal engine, but I still cannot see the .uasset files in the content browser.
I am using ue 4.6.1.
Am I missing something, or is there another way to import the .uasset files?

You have to Drag it in your content folder NOT INSIDE UNREALENGINE.

I have the same problem with textures. I double-checked that the content browser is pointing at the right folder on the HDD by using “show in Explorer”. Everything seems to be OK but the textures just don’t show. Probably a mismatch of the versions? Do uasset show up always or are they created for a certain engine version and will only show up if the Engine version matches the uasset version?
[edit] I think I know why: it says you need to install Substance plugin first - which doesn’t work since a couple of months and engine versions :frowning:

’ answer worked for me

Thank you so much. This arose as a debacle for myself even in 2023. Thank you again!

I have copied them in a subfolder of the content folder and they are sitting there in the explorer but nothing has appeared in the Unreal content browser. I’m in 5.1 if that helps? maybe they made it even harder?

Im still having this issue now in 5.3 ive added an Unreal Engine asset in a folder to my content directory in explorer, its not showing any content

I am having this same issue. No .uasset will show in the content browser even if they exist in the content directory (and plugins do not see the files either), and when I try to import the uassets into the editor’s content browser, I get the error, failed to import unknown extensions “uasset”. 5.3 version of the editor. Any solution yet?

me too…
I don’t have any idea…

Doing this gave me a folder that shows in unreal which has no content at all inside.

I have same kind of problem in UE 5.3

First, shut down your Unreal Engine, open up the Content folder inside your project in Explorer, put the .uassets in there, and reopen your project in UE.

There was a problem with the original file. Seems it was probably a redirector in the asset set I was provided. Received the original files and everything was good to go by adding the uasset files in the proper folder.

This worked for me, thanks so much!
