unexpected program state more common after latest update

I have been getting a lot of “unexpected program state” error messages after latest update.

Projects are nothing special compared what i have done successfully before. My largest projects have 2500 photos.

Sometimes i get them in alignment but also sometimes while unwrapping.

I am using following machine

Ryzen 1800X + 64Gram + 1080ti + Samdung EVO 960 500G M.2.NVMe + 2TB Sata SSD.

Win 10 build 1709

RC version 1.0.3.3943

Hello janosh,

can you please give us more details about the project in which you have this problem, like number of images, source of images, if it is georeferenced or not etc.? Also the steps you made and the settings you used that led to this error.

It is hard to tell the reason without knowing more details. Thank you.

I experienced some initial instability with most of the updates since last summer. The weird thing is that they seem to go away after a few days (which is ridiculous, I know). Maybe it has something to do with a reboot after the installation?

Usually i do rooms or some other spaces so they tend to have +2000 images.

I shoot with canon 5Dmk3 with tamron 24-70mm lens with F8-F11m locked to 24mm with image stabilation off. I use also canon 17-40mm F8-F11 at 17mm locked with tape. Usually I use ISO 100 and tripod when shooting. Tripod is tedious to use but you get to used to it and it gives much much better quality pictures.

In Lightroom i give some light to shadows and maybe darken highlights a bit. I am not anymore using lens correction but when I did I never had any problems by doing so. I usually add 100% color noise removal. with ISO 100 that is safe to do since it really gets rid of the color noise nothing else. I export usually 8bit tiffs but sometimes jpgs with 100% quality settings. I have never noticed any difference in reconstruction between jpg and and tiff. I don’t never resize my images either.

I don’t get the error message often but after last update there is more of them. Usually they appear alignment so i have changed settings to get continued. Now they have appeared sometimes on unwrapping.

I guess it would be good information about what causes the error. I mean is it something in pictures or the way how they are processed or just bad shooting. I have a solid method how i shoot my pictures and the success rate is very good, RC is amazing piece of software!

One other thing that I have noticed after last update is that before if i set the maxímum texture size to 8K then RC made 8K textures as many as needed but now it sometimes makes 40 2K textures instead which would be same as 10 8k textures why it doesn’t obey me?

No idea, why it would disobey your texture setting -> different bug report?

BTW, just when I was typing the first sentence, it just terminated without any error message during alignment.

It was a re-alignment after I already had a few components but deleted them beforehand. This and the combination with ground control points present seems to trigger some bad crashes. I did notice that already with the build before the present one, but attributed it to a difficult image set of mine.

The easiest way to find out wheter it’s the image set (which I doubt) or not (which I favour) is to re-run an old one where you know it worked before. If it crashes too, then it’s not th images…
