Unable to open project

I recently upgraded my rig and am unable to open a project I was working on. I’m not even able to create a new blank project. I get to about 43% and then :poof: I’m staring at my desktop.

My previous rig had zero issues and I’m wondering if it’s a compatibility issue with my build.

Current Rig:
Windows 11 Pro
ASUS ROG STRIX Z790-E Gaming Wifi II
Intel i9 14900K
RTX 4080
192GB Corsair Vengeance DDR5
2TB Samsung 980 Pro M.2 NVMe

What I’ve tried:
Sent my mobo into ASUS for inspection (came back good)
Completely re-installed Windows 11 pro on this new SSD (previously on a different M.2)
Swapped M.2 spots on the mobo (to not use the same PCIe channel as GPU)
Swapped out RAM
Purchase a new PSU (ROG Thor 1200W Platinum)
swapped my 4080 for my 3080
Ran Prime95 to test my cpu
Re-installed Nvidia Drivers, Epic/UE, Visual C++'s listed as prereq’s on unreal site
Changed BIOS settings for PL1 (125) PL2 (253)
Turned off Multi-core Enhancement in BIOS
Turned off XMP

Hey @iSneakyPewPew! Welcome to the Forums!

Does this happen with every / newly created projects or just your current one? Have you tried copying your assets into a new project?

Every project, new or not. As you can infer from this last sentence, I’m unable to open a project to copy items to. It did create a project folder though before it crashed. Let me copying files to that directory, and get back.

Crash in runnable thread Background Worker

This would point towards a problem with threading on the CPU. Perhaps try turning off hyper-threading and see if the error persists.

A bit of a long shot but it might help

Seems intel microcode bios settings can sometimes cause unreal to crash. You may not be getting the oodle error or compile errors but it still may have the same source.

Newer Intel processors seem to not play nice with unreal (something about floating point operations at higher frequencies). Perhaps the microcode fix can help in your case too

Thank you so much. I wish I would have tried that earlier. That did it!

To clarify, I just turned off Hyperthreading on top of everything else listed above.

I’m glad you were able to get the project running but normally you shouldn’t need to turn off hyper-threading (you lose performance).

Could it be a matter of power draw from your PSU? Does it have enough watts to run all components at peak power draw? If the power signal is not clean it could cause CPU instabilities.

Is the power supply at least 80 Gold standard 850 Watts? I’m guessing looking at the parts that it should be up to par with the rest of the parts.

Do you have a UPS to filter out power fluctuations / spikes?
Is your new pc using the same power outlet as the old one?

Yes. I swapped out the PSU because of this very issue. I swapped to a ROG THOR 1200W Platinum. I don’t have a UPS though. There was some issues with the AFCI tripping every time the GPU was under load, or maybe the CPU, and sometimes just while idling. The electrician swapped out the AFCI with a regular breaker and that stopped it tripping. I need to invest in a UPS though. Great point.

In that case the instability could be due to maybe not power surges but drops in power. This would basically have a similar situation as with undervolting. I could cause instabilities during high load. The ups should filter this out no problems.

Best of luck getting it running at 100% speed.

Thanks! I’ll drop by Best Buy or Newegg today and pick one out!

Edit: I’ll update when the UPS gets here.

Confirmed. I ordered the CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS System, 1500VA/1000W, 12 Outlets, AVR, Mini Tower and turned Hyperthreading back on. I’m able to open projects no problem, no turning down my cpu or reverting the microcode.

Now to let the landlord know the power is sus.

Glad you got it running a 100%. It could be power fluctuations due to many high powered appliances running simultaneously in the building: washing machines, dryers, ovens (any 3 phase appliance). This could cause instability.

It’s a tough thing to check, you’d probably need to do some tests with a multi meter to get some basic info.
