Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Sprites

Hi to Unreal Engine 4 community. I have imported all sprite characters from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on Sega. All work is done with Texture Packer. I plan to sell it when marketplace will be released. I think price will be about 5-10$.

You can download Sub-Zero sprites here LINK REMOVED BY MODERATOR. It’s free sample. To import in your project select all .paper2dsprites and import them. It will automatically create sprite flipbook animation, textures and frames.

Also Texture Packer allows to you create a HD sprites, x2, x4 scale from original size. So, the final package will include 3 versions of sprites: original, x2 scale, x4 scale.

Correct me if I’m wrong but wouldn’t you need permission to do so? I believe this may be illegal. Don’t quote me on this but I would ask someone.

If it will be illegal, i’ll make it free.

I would still consider contacting the company that owns the assets and verify if it’s possible.

As others have pointed out, what you are trying to do seems illegal. I would strongly advice you get in contact with the original owners of the assets (Sega in this case) and make sure you are not infringing on any copy-rights. This is applicable even if your are giving it out for free.

So please make sure you are on the safe side before peoceeding with this.

You can’t sell them on the marketplace or even give them away since Ultimate MK3 was recently released on XBL (2011) and therefore is still protected under copyright. The only way you could is if you got explicit permission by NeatherRealm Studio’s and considering that Mortal Kombat X is coming out next year and Ed Boon is extremely protective of the MK franchise I unfortunately do not see him saying that it would be ok.

I think you might be missing the point. You cannot distribute assets created from copyrighted material even if its for free unless you have explicit permission to do so :slight_smile:

It’ll still be a copyright violation. Not illegal, but you’ll receive letters from lawyers and ultimately could get sued if you persisted. It’ll be rejected from the marketplace 100% for sure.

Just make your own sprites of a similar style and sell those. With Paper2D getting the treatment it’d be a fine idea.

You can’t even do a copy of it with assets made from scratch. I was making an MK game too with some friends, only using the idea of MK1, but making all the art, code and audio from scratch. After the game started coming together, I got a call from Warner Brothers, saying that I can’t share it with anybody. I said it was a fan project for free, using original content. It didn’t matter, just a close reference to the IP is enough for them to get on my case.

I thought it was alright for a while, because some of the original creators of MK, John Vogel, and John Tobias, saw the work and thought it was pretty cool. They don’t own the IP though, so it doesn’t matter what the makers of the game think, but who owns the IP.

I’m learning how to use UE4 now to make a fighting game, but it has to be something original. It sucks to be a fan of these games, and want to make your favorite characters so bad, but you have to fight the urge…

I’m still working on a fighting game, something like Virtua Fighter is what I’m shooting for. I’m still building all the basic parts of the system to make it function, most of it is working in some way.

I’m going down a list of things I need.

Figure out how to read fireball inputs, and flip controls.
Figure out how to move the camera like in VF or Tekken.
Figure out how to buffer inputs
Animations, combos
collision
etc.

I have all these systems figured out, but they need to be put together in a more elegant manner. Because I’m still new, the code is a mess but it works…
