UEFN device subclassing or source code?

I’m making a map that will contain a mod of the standard CTF functionality. I’m starting to dig into building the code, and the best way to approach what I want would (in other languages) undoubtedly be to subclass the existing capture_area device source code and add stuff.
I guess I could build a capture_area of my own, but it seems a waste to do so when it’s already built. Is either:

  • the source for the canonical devices available in Verse somewhere?
  • there the ability to modify existing devices to have extra bits of functionality?

I’m certain I can build what I want, but having help would… You know, help.

Anyways. Thanks to whomever takes a look and is willing to help me a bit.

There is no “device source” and probably never will be (not in the way you think) because Verse is, by design, an extension of Fortnite Creative and Unreal Engine. In other words, there is no “Verse source for devices” in existence because Verse is just a wrapper that exposes things.

To actually answer your question though, I have read from a Dev/Mod somewhere here that there is currently no way to make your own devices in Verse - however it is something they have planned, if I remember correctly. So what you want to do is not directly possible at this time.

The best you can do is try and “wrap” the device as much as possible, or re-create the device behavior via simpler devices + some code plumbing. In your case, making your own capture area, it’s very easy with a Mutator Zone. You can set the Zone to fire on Player Enter/Exit, make the Zone invisible and/or do your own visuals, and so on. The key take away here is that you’re using the Mutator Zone only for the Player Enter/Exit Events; you can leave the actual parameters of the Mutator at their defaults.

Lots of games will be made like this; finding tricks to use existing devices. I highly suggest skimming through Fortnite.digest.verse and making yourself familiar with all the Events there, since knowledge of them is key to doing truly original (and therefore fun/successful) game mechanics

As I read the documentation, you can absolutely make your own devices in Verse. There are tutorials and everything. The game controller is expected to be a device, for example, in custom game types… Am I wrong here? I’m not trying to be rude, but…

Of course, in order to get Verse code into the game you need to make a Verse device. This issue is about modifying or extending existing Fortnite devices via Verse, which is not possible with the current API.

It’s my understanding that is not possible yet. I think if you search out the roadmap video, they talk about that in there somewhere.
