UE5 Static mesh won't properly slot into bone socket

I have been trying to bang my head over this issue for a while now and have had absolutely no luck so far.

essentially what I’m doing is I’m taking a skeletal mesh I have put bone sockets on each of the joints and to those sockets I’m attaching a static mesh.

Before applying to socket

However each time I attach the mesh to the socket it will move to a random position and change in scale to be significantly larger.

After applying mesh to socket

Both models are being exported from blender.
