UE5 is so slow to launch, despite spec

I’ve got a brand new computer and fresh installs, yet UE5 takes so long to launch. Just clicking “Launch Engine” from the Epic Games launcher takes so long. I’ve installed 5.3.2 through Epic Games Launcher onto my SSD (SDSSDE61-2T00-G25), yet when I go to launch it it takes such a long time, around 5-10 minutes to load. I had an older computer load it quicker.

New Computer:
i9-13900H (20 CPUs) GeForce RTX 4060, with 32 GB RAM - Windows 11

Old computer loaded faster with an i7 and GeForce 2060 and 16 GB RAM - Windows 10

Steps I’ve made:
Re-installed the engine three times now
Windows updates
Verified the files
Run as admin
Operating on brand new SSD with appropriate USB C port
Tried unplugging all other USB devices and trying different ports
Restarted system overall many, many times
Plenty of disk space remaining
Eliminating all other background processes
Setting priority in taskbar to high, but not highest
Setting additional CPU cores
Verified graphics drivers. Rolled back, then updated back to current.

Am I missing something here?

An empty scene?

It’s slow as soon as I click “Launch” from the epic games launcher. It’s slow to load a project. Once it’s in, it operates normally.

This is too vague. What is a project. It takes 10s to launch the first person template but could take a couple of minutes to load Kite Demo.

Are you launching this off an SSD?

Same project?

Thank you for replying.

It takes too long to load any of the default templates. I’m not even trying anything I’ve made yet, just the initial launch portal is what’s taking so long. I’m not even picking any project yet. Once I do, it takes a typical load time and then operates normally. But - for some reason - the launch portal takes a prolonged period, and I mean like 10 actual minutes to load the screen to just choose projects.

So it’s before any project selection.

It takes minutes to get here?

Exactly. Yes.

The initializing for Unreal Editor to get to just this screen takes so long.

You’re on a very high-end laptop. This should take 10-15 seconds, top.

Just read the updated list.

  • what does this mean - are you using an external drive?
  • is the launcher the only thing you have problems with? If you try to copy a bunch of tiny files across, no probs?

Again, thanks for helping look into this - this is my first time on the forum and I look forward to returning the favor sometime. Hallo!

Yes, I’m using an external SSD and I have to imagine the problem is somehow related to this. I used it on the previous computer with no issue, but for some reason it’s slow on this one. I guess I should try installing it on the main SSD? Bahh…

SSD = SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD - Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware - External Solid State Drive - SDSSDE61-2T00-G25

Sooo… why are we blaming the UE launcher (not that it deserves praise) :innocent: What is the actual setup? The engine itself is installed on an external USB drive?!

But seriously. What transfers speeds do you actually get out of that drive via the USB you’re hooked up to. Move a bunch of small files around. What do you get? Ideally, you’d run a Crystal Disk Info to really figure out what is up, but just give us a ballpark number.

One important note here - you are simultaneously reading and writing data - this will dramatically impact the performance of that kind of drive.

Are you sure it’s not connected to USB 2.0? These are still sometimes included even in pricier units.

Well I take it by your response it’s unusual to have it installed on an external, so I’ll completely reinstall Windows and the engine onto the main partition (which isn’t to say Windows was on external, but that a fresh install seems ideal). I was primarily getting the delays with UE and nothing else, really. But I’ll wipe it all and try again to see.

I figured I could ask for help with it here as it’s UE I’m mostly testing it around, so I appreciate your help, but I understand if it’s supposed to be elsewhere. I’m new and didn’t know better. I’ll go try it out and see. Thank you.

Is your OS also on that drive?

No, sorry, I realized my edit may have seemed to imply that, but it isn’t. I just figured a completely fresh install would help. The only thing on this external drive is UE. That’s it.
