UE5: Dynamic shadows snap on and OFF in a second on actors at camera distance, why?

Hi,

I was testing UE5 Directional Light “cascade options”, and while the default scene walls fade softly… actors just snap and turn Off their shadows in a second, why?

How to avoid actor shadows to just snap and turn off suddenly? I already tested increasing Dynamic Shadow distance, but it only affect walls… , actually I already tested all the dynamic cascade options, they only affect walls distance and rate (speed) of droping shadows, but actors keep turning off at the exact distance in a second.

Please help!

I just did this with the default 3rd person char, and it works fine.

I’m guessing there must be some setting on the actor?

I usually get this with shadows set to medium in scalability settings.

No, scalability, everything is high

But I also got this issue in UE5 preview… I thought it was a bug that they were going to fix latter, the human character you see in there is a CC3 character, the everything is default, default scene… not sure if the issue might be, that I changed the shadow map method from Virtual shadows to “shadow maps”… BUT… if I don’t do this, UE5 runs at 35FPS on my RTX 3080 LOL…

So I f I change to Shadow maps so UE5 at least runs at 60FPS LOL… is there any fix to the shadow issue?

I also use normal shadow maps. Frankly, the main difference I see is a drop in frame rate

Not sure what the fix is though. Doesn’t happen to me…
