UE5+ causes crashes just for loading a Normal Map

Ever since I have installed the UE 5 versions of the Editor, it is constantly crashing for even the smallest reason, like importing a Normal Map.

I have to load the lowest editor (usually 4.27, create my scene, lighting etc). Then open subsequent Editor versions in succession, creating multiple versions until I reach 5.5. Every Project has at least 4 Versions on disk.

I cannot create a single project in any of the UE 5+ series of Editors. Simple tasks like moving a mesh between folders, crash, importing a Normal Map (doesn’t seem to happen with other maps) crash, building Lighting, even on the Lowest Settings, crash, crash, crash.

I have lowered the resolution of my system from a 4K to a 1K, to try and stop the GC from screaming. That works. I have run test after test on the system, without error, including MB stress tests, GC stress tests, Storage and Memory Stress tests… Nothing shows up and all other programmes run fine, including all of the Unity Editors and other Graphics and VR editors.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled all version 5 Editors without resolution.

Steel Legend MB
AMD Ryzen 9 16 Core/32 Threads, running in standard mode (not overclocked), Water Cooled
32GB GSkill Ram in 4 Ram Sticks running at 3.2mhz (not overclocked)
5700 XT Graphics Card, 8GB GDDR6 ram, running at standard settings running at 1k resolution
2x NVMe PCI 500GB Drives
3x 1TB Sata SSD drives
2x 500 GB Sata SSD drives

I have another system that is Network connected with this system…

Asrock MB
AMD Ryzen 7 8 core/16 Threads, running in stock mode, Water Cooled
16 GB Corsair Ram in 2x8gb Memory Sticks, running at stock speeds
570 XT Graphics Card, 4GB GDDR5 Ram, running standard settings running at 1k resolution
1x 500GB PCI NVMe Storage
2x 1TB Stata SSD drives
3x 150GB Sata SSD drives

Both systems run identical Editors, both have the same issue, both tested and have no issues with other engine platforms. Both can create a scene in 4.27, then open with further versions creating a copy, that can manipulate assets, butt will not load further Maps, but will allow for higher settings on Building Lighting.

I have all the versions of Visual Scripting and other Windows related drivers and services. No Viruses detected on Deep Scans.

Hi @Immersive-Games

Knowing that you’ve tested it in both different systems and get the same results shows that is probably a compatibility issue or hardware setup, could also be missing drivers.

  • Have you tried updating your OS and GPU Drivers?

  • Have you tried switching between DirectX 11, DirectX12 and Vulkan? Make sure your hardware supports DX12 or Vulkan

  • Have you tried Lowering the graphics settings even further, disabling Nanite and Lumen?

  • Even though your system have enough RAM it could be that you’re running out of virtual memory, Try increasing it.

  • If your Disk drive is almost at full capacity, it can cause Unreal to crash since it won’t find space for cache and temporary files.

  • Are you doing your tests on a fresh new project? If not some files could be corrupted from the other project.

  • Try using an older version of Unreal since newer versions may have more bugs

  • Disable antivirus. Sometimes real time protection software can cause crashes during asset import

Let me know if any of these helps.

Hi there BRS_Pat

Both OS are identical and are fully up to date. Including drivers, VS code, with a full deep systems check and burn test.

My Graphics system and drivers both support 11,12 and Vulcan, switching didn’t help.

I have a memory, storage, ram, cpu threads and internet monitor running (low profile), it shows temp, which cpu threads are in use and what % of each use, ram used, storage space and throughput… all seems fine, until I try importing a normal texture, then spike and crash.

32gb ram, only 30% used
32 Threads, around 50% used at a max of 50% utility
Temps well within system specs (lower than 70% of max)
Bandwidth to/from storage at around 35% throughput. NVmE’s around 500mb/sec.
Brand new project, only crashes when I import the Normal Map (1st one). I was wondering if the maps were OpenGl which was causing the issue, but swapped to DXT, same outcome. Resolution 1k.

I have tried this workflow, I create the project without issue in 4.27, open copy of further editors until 5.5… then crash.

I recently discovered that one of my projects kept reporting it needed a light rebuild, despite doing one, then the editor crashed, reopened set lowest quality/resolutions etc and rebuilt again, crash. I resolved the issue, when I discovered it was the DefaultMat used on editor prims, that would not build lighting. Changed to one of my own Materials, all was well. What was weird, despite creating in 4.27, none of the other editors (5.0, 5.3, 5.4) crashed, until I opened the exact copy into 5.5…
Lighting built, distant meshes built, UV map resolutions set etc etc… just 5.5 crashed.

I now use this long drawn out workflow and only build to editor 5.4. I’ll wait until 5.5 is more ‘mature’.

I am suspicious to the amount of Beta and Experimental plug-ins installed by default. I tried turning off all but the most basic ones. Strange how someone would want 5 media players all at the sametime, and UDP/TCP connections along with Google connections… I counted more than 50 all installed.
