I am planning to create a short, 1-hour first-person horror game in Unreal Engine 5. The player will control a character exploring a dark house using a flashlight.
Since my main character is 175 cm tall, I want to make sure the environment feels realistic yet comfortable for the camera and player movement.
I would like to know what the recommended dimensions (in centimeters/Unreal Units) should be for the rooms in the house? Specifically, how big should the living room be to feel atmospheric and eerie without causing camera clipping issues?
Any advice on modular wall heights or hallway widths for this type of horror game would be greatly appreciated!
Hi,
We successfully launched horror FPP game with modular walls so I can share my experience.
We had 0.5m, 1m, 2m and 3m walls. The height is dependant on your game setting (in general the ceilling were a lot higher in the past) but probably you could start with 3.5-4m
As for the general dimensions of the rooms - just start with the dimensions inspired from the real world, ie copy your living room or something, add couple of cubes that represent furnitures with live-size dimensions as well, then spawn inside with your flashlight setup.
With modular walls you can easily copy such a room and create a smaller and bigger version, see what suits your game better.
In general starting with the real world scale is convinient, because you can easily blockout stuff by just looking at the dimensions online.
In our case the biggest difference to the real world were doors - these were wider and higher to feel comfortable in FPP.
