As for the pricing, in NZ the R7 1700 is quite a lot cheaper than 6800K.
1700 = $488.
6800K = $669, and any CPU cooler will add another ~$50+.
Cheapest X99 mobo will set you back $450, while a B350 AM4 mobo can be had for ~$150.
So over here at least, an 1800X system can be had for back less than a 6800K one.

Ah, I was comparing to 1700X since we cant overclock at work (we don’t want to risk it, to many workstations). But price of 6800k and 1700X.
It is true about motherboard but it’s not so bad. 2011-3 will cost you ~200$, and if you want X370 for AM4 that would be around same price ballpark ( ).
But you are right, if we go for raw power with core count, and reasonable mobo then AMD setup would be cheaper.

Let’s see how AM4 and Ryzen matures

EDIT: Oh, didn’t seen your prices are NZ. Then it makes much more sense for you to get R7.
