UE4 - intel 7700K or AMD 1800X?

I feel roughly the same, I’ll check again when the platform is a bit more mature (There’s a new BIOS out that apparently reduces cache/RAM latency, but I’m waiting on the next one).

As for the pricing, in NZ the R7 1700 is quite a lot cheaper than 6800K.
1700 = $488.
6800K = $669, and any CPU cooler will add another ~$50+.
Cheapest X99 mobo will set you back $450, while a B350 AM4 mobo can be had for ~$150.
So over here at least, an 1800X system can be had for back less than a 6800K one.

Just had a look and a 1700 system is about the same as a 6700K/7700K system here (the CPU itself is around $50 cheaper).

I did expect the compilation performance to be a bit higher though.

Ah, I was comparing to 1700X since we cant overclock at work (we don’t want to risk it, to many workstations). But price of 6800k and 1700X.
It is true about motherboard but it’s not so bad. 2011-3 will cost you ~200$, and if you want X370 for AM4 that would be around same price ballpark ( ).
But you are right, if we go for raw power with core count, and reasonable mobo then AMD setup would be cheaper.

Let’s see how AM4 and Ryzen matures

EDIT: Oh, didn’t seen your prices are NZ. Then it makes much more sense for you to get R7.

So i got my new workstation.
Ryzen 1700, nvidia 1060, 32gb ram…
However im facing some issues with sound (in all games music is 50% quiet but SFX are 50% more loud… wtf?)
Then overwatch sometimes is in loading for 5 minutes then not working… sometimes work fine in few seconds… + some minor glitches…

Do you have experience with similar problems with ryzen CPUs?

Is this not related to audio drivers?
I heard theat AMD released new chipset drivers recently, Maybe that would help.

Yeah, i finally found where issue was. With mainboard there is sound driver, i found in SFX “balance volume” and now everything works fine

So there has a “helpful” option there? (The kind that looks useful/helpful, But does not quite do the job right)

Just want to point out how stupid the “it’s bad for gaming” posts are - You’re going to get 130 instead of 140 fps @ 2k; you mean to telll me that this is in any way shape or form a deal breaker and not just being a petty idiot?

No one considering the 1700 or 6800k should be concerned with gaming benchmarks. Even most CPU benchmarks are horrible comparisons (There’s +/-50% performance differences depending on the benchmark), what you really want are actual testing in the applications you will be using it for, which is a lot harder to find.

Guys… i found much bigger problem…
I bought this ryzen processor primarily for UE build (+ some other difficult tasks) and now when i building small area with 10-20 static meshes, its ok, built in few seconds, however when i tried to build 180-400 objects then my computer left frozen (black screen)…
OMG im so disappointed !!!

Have you looked at the event log to see if there is anything there?

Sounds like you need to put a better cooler on it maybe?

I never heard about event log, where can i find it?

i dont think, cpu running on 35-40° but after i click build, PC crash in 5 secs… that cannot be problem with cooler…

I had a similar issue for the longest time. When I compiled code my PC would just randomly freeze for no conceivable reason. No blue screen no nothing - just complete halt.

I noticed my PC jumping to 105% - 110% load in my task manager so I went ahead and disabled all auto-tweaking **** in the BIOS (My particular ASUS mobo had something called Ai Tweak). Fixed it right up.

I’d first try updating the bios, then try tweaking them.

My full trouble shooting list would be

  1. Update BIOS.
  2. Disable any auto tweak settings in BIOS
  3. Uninstall, reinstall UE4.
  4. Reformat, reinstall Windows.

This is the Windows event log, Where important stuff is supposed to be logged.
You should be able to search for “event log” in the start menu/screen if Win8+

Guy who installed me this PC said i have newest BIOS… so i dont know what to do now, but cpu-z says i have bios F2 but on official motherboard website there are f3 f4 f5 bios… GA-AX370-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0) Key Features | Motherboard - GIGABYTE Global

i found only 1 critical error, + many other errors…
PC crashing when processor performing on ± 100%… i cannot find auto-tweak option in bios  it seems its not here

Check the manual on that gigabyte website.

I remember some software by the name of “everest” that logs data(CPU temps, loads, Etc) to help diagnose crashes.
I am not sure if it is free or has a trial.

Edit: Just thought of something; Perhaps the vCore is too low at high load, Causing an issue.
Could you try resetting the UEFI to (optimal) defaults, Or what ever it is called?

Why not ask this guy for help?

this seems to be true. I “overclocked” CPU before tests to 3700 but not increased voltage because voltage says its “auto”, so i didnt touched voltage.
When i downclocked CPU to 3000 (default settings) now UE build is pretty nice  lightmass took rougly 85% of CPU (7 cores?) and level (±550 unbuilt objects, default project) was build in 20 sec.
