UE4 - Install error - Path length

Hello and good evening.

I have a problem, when I try to install the latest version of UE4 (4.24).

I get an error message: “The maximum path size exceeded.” Error code: IS-PL01.

The basic (suggested) path is:

E:\Program Files(x86)\Epic Games\

and then:

E:\Program Files(x86)\Epic Games\UE_4.24

I didn’t change anything on the file path myself.

It worked with previous versions very well.

I tried to delete an older version of UE4 and install it again. That causes now the same error.

Has the maximum path lenght changed internally?

I hope somebody can help me.

That path is about 40 characters long, that is really pushing it when you consider Unreal will add its own incredibly long pathnames to that. You must be just hitting the 260-character limit.

I wouldn’t put the source code under Program Files anyway, that’s confusing and causes security issues.

Just make a path like: E:\dev\UE_424 and use that.

Hey i had the same issues i tried what was said above me by: Batty_Austin, his solution worked for me i went to my user’s folder from my local disk which you find in This pc on file Explorer and i saved it to my user’s Account, just to shorten the name of the file path and it worked, thank you very much.

I had the same error. Installing to a shorter file-path worked for me as well.
C:\Unreal\UE_4.24

It isn’t ideal, but it worked for me. I hope Epic increases the maximum path length, as I’d like to keep everything in Program Files.
