UE4 freezing up

Today, I was using UE4, specifically modifying a matinee, and then suddenly it stopped working as I clicked on the Add Key button. My PC was fine, completely unaffected and I could switch to other tasks. I had to close UE4 using the task manager. While this is a one time occurrence, I have just started making my game and fear that it may happen again

Hi -

Thank you for your report. Hopefully this was a one time occurrence for you, but if it does occur again can you take note of the exact steps you did that caused the issue and list that information here with as much detail as possible including the following information:

Version of Engine Build : 4.7.6
Binary or Compiled (Launcher or GitHub): Launcher

[Steps of Reproduction - include any details you can about the level / editor setup and current working environment that you can remember, working in Matinee is good, but working in a Matinee with a Director Group, 2 cameras and a Particle Effect being controlled via my Level Blueprint is much more helpful]

Finally if the engine does eventually crash and not just freeze, please make sure to submit the crash report, trying to type the above Steps of Reproduction into the Description Area and post back here with your Machine ID # displayed on Crash.

Hopefully as I said this issue will not recur for you, but if it does please post back here with the additional information and we will begin looking into it immediately.

Thank You

Eric Ketchum

This has happened 3 times in a row today.
The first two times happened when I was trying to open a matinee and change the matinee respectively. The third time, I was making a pause menu and was moving the “flower” of the box(I don’t know what it’s called). Before it froze, the “flower” split in two(I dont know if it’s possible of effect of freezing up).
It had the exact same effect as before, freezing up and having to be closed via task manager.
This happened on UE 4.7.6.

The first time, I had just opened UE4 and clicked on the “Open Matinee” button
The second time, I was working on my matinee, changing angles of my camera.
The third time, Ive included details above.
I can give the details of my matinee if needed

Hi -

Can you upload a copy of your DXDIAG? Also when you CPU froze how long did you wait before using the Task Manager? Finally, If you can open Windows Event Viewer and find the Critical or Error that corresponds to the timeframe of the engine freeze and save out that event (or events if you cannot determine which one) and upload that here as well. You will have to zip those event file(s) as the file type is not recognized by AnswerHub.

Thank You

Hi -

If you run a search for “Event Viewer” in the Run search field after clicking the Windows Start Icon, then it should come up. Here is a good breakdown of the Program for you, http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/226084-event-viewer-open-use-windows-7-a.html

Thank You

For the first two times, I waited for around 10-20 minutes before UE4 froze. The next time I did so instantly.
I do not know what windows event viewer is, and it is not shown when I search Windows. Is there a specific way to get this?

As for dxdiag, attaching it to post.link text

My computer on UE4.12 and 4.11 constantly freezes to the point where I need to use task manager to reset it, I’m starting to wonder if using UE4 is a waste of time, ive wasted countless hours just waiting or terminating UE4 and reloading hoping for a different result… I am working on a time sensitive project and this constant crashing is annoying and ridiculous. I have the minimum system requirements. I had this issue with a gaming laptop too. My current PC is a i5 3740, 8gb ram ATI Radeon HD 7770(not the best card but should work) 1gb. My other computer with the same issue even worse was 16gb ram NVidia GTX 800x both ran DX11.

Hi Sierra Games.

I’m sorry to hear that you experience regular freezing while using UE4, but this isn’t likely to be a bug with the engine itself, as it does not occur internally or for the majority of developers. If you are able to determine otherwise and that there is a specific reproduction case, please let us know. UE4 does require a powerful system for development, so you may need to consider an upgrade or run system diagnostics to determine if there may be some other issue at play. Numerous discussions are available across the Answerhub and Forums where developers have recommended the ideal systems for development.

Cheers
