I’m getting the Fatal Error of running out of memory when I’m attempting to save my VFX, and after checking my memory usage, not even half of my memory is ever being used. Anytime I try to SAVE any of my VFX, it opens the “Saving Package - 0%” window and it crashes and gives me this error.
I noticed the VFX in question I’m attempting to save has the little red corner triangle indicator on it. If I ever try to save it, the Engine crashes. Is there a way I can revert the save to a previous version? This all started when the engine crashed while working on the VFX previously.
If I delete anything, it crashed while trying to Unload and gives me a file assertions failure message.
Been working off a Portable HD. Tried localizing everything by moving the files in C: Drive. Now I only get Assertion Errors when I try to save. Moved the files back onto the HD, now only getting Assertion Errors when saving instead of memory ones.
Really REALLY need a response ASAP
Hey Divital -
Check your Hard Drive Space, usually the Save Package low memory warning refers to HDD space and not RAM memory.
If you have succificent space, can you please give me the Machine ID from the Crash Reporter that is generated at the time of Crash, should be a pop up window.
Thank You,
Eric Ketchum
I have 1 Terrabyte of memory in this thing. There’s no way I’m out of memory already.

I just really need to get the ball rolling again because this stuff’s due tonight relatively soon.
I can still edit my VFX as long as I don’t save them it seems. That little red corner triangle in the thumbnail is only on my Particle Systems in the Editor Menu. What Is that? Never seen it before. Is that the problem?
Duplicating these files also crashes UE4.
Hey Divital -
The Red Triangle just means that the VFX Thumbnail in the Content Browser does not match the Effect anymore. It will remain until you update the VFX Thumbnail and will reappear if you edit the effect again. The crash reporter is logging the report now I may not get access to it before Monday.
Are you getting the crash on all types of saves or just with the Cascade save? In other words, are you crashing from the Level Save button in the Main Viewport’s toolbar, the Save All button in the Content Browser or the Save button in Cascade? Is this crash limited to your one project? If so and if you can narrow down the exact asset, try making a new project Blank with no content in it and then copy the *.uasset and *.umap files over into the new Content folder via Windows Explorer and test the save function again.

Okay so… This is going to sound bizarre, but the moment I made a new snapshot thumbnail for the VFX, the problem disappeared. There’s no fatal errors or crashes. Was this a fatal bug or something? I recall in UDK that you could go on working on a project without updating your thumbnail for as long as you’d like.
I will test it further, can you let me know exact what engine version you are using and if you are using from GutHub or Launcher.
Good Luck
Eric Ketchum
Right-o. I attempted running the project from GitHub and the original Engine Launcher, both work fine now. Originally both had the same issues shared across both. The version I’m running is 4.6.1.
Sorry for not responding sooner! The issue was across all methods of saving you described. I attempted to fix the problem before finding the solution by making a new project and shifting the items both in terms of migrating and copying them over, and I recall the issue still occurred. The only fix I found was to update the thumbnail to go on.
