Ue4: c++ long compile times vs2019

I’ve been learning c++, I’ve noticed that my compile times are slow, editing one line of code in the cpp file could take 10 seconds to 2 minutes, and its at least 2 minutes for header files. I’m new to c++, is there anyway to reduce the compile time? Thanks!

My Hardware: (It’s a $800 laptop)
1tb harddrive
128gb ssd
12gb ram
gtx 1650 mobile with integrated intel UHD 630 graphics
i5 9300h

Compile times are down to CPU and storage drive speeds.
I think build times varying from 10 seconds to 2 minutes sounds about right for your computer.

Oh ok, is there any way I can optimize it?

I wonder if following this guide might help:

But yes, I think if you are using all of the out of the box configurations, then compile times will range depending on precisely what has changed in your code and how fast your processor and storage device is. It’s definitely worth working on your ssd as it will be faster than your harddrive.

If you keep open the output build window in visual studio, you will also be able to see precisely what files are being recompiled which may be of interest to you.

Googling for compilation improvements will probably return quite a few various things to try but I’m not sure you’ll see huge improvements.

Good luck dude!!!

Let’s see.if anyone else has a better answer for you! :slight_smile:

I have vs 2019 on my ssd but unreal on hdd and my projects also on hdd because the lack of space of my ssd. Googling compilation improvments didn’t help much. Thanks for your input!
