I’m having a serious stability issue with Metahumans in UE 5.6.
I have a few Metahumans in my project, and they used to work fine. Recently, for no clear reason, the editor started crashing constantly – around 50 times a day – and it always seems to be related to Metahumans.
What I’ve tried so far:
Reinstalled GPU drivers (RTX 5700)
Set all graphics quality/settings to Low in the editor
Verified that it’s not map-specific
The weird part:
The editor crashes all the time
But if I Play in Editor or run a packaged build, everything works fine and does not crash
So the issue seems to be editor-only and somehow tied to Metahumans.
No idea what else to try at this point.
Any ideas what could be causing this or what I should check next?
Usually there’s a trigger for this type of crashes, did you update or change any component in your UE build lately? As well, please check if the metahuman plugin remains the same version as before.
If all versions remain consistent, then what’s needed here is a certain cause. Check the crash log (or share it and we can help reviewing it) to look for the exact component causing the crash. It’s possible that just one of your metahuman have something like, a corrupted groom asset, and that crashes the whole thing.
Also, to rule out project corruption, you can perform a cache clear. Navigate to your project’s main directory, and delete folders DerivedDataCache, Saved, and Intermediate. After that, allow the project to rebuild, and test your metahumans again.
Another surefire way to figure this out, is opening an empty project, and loading your metahumans, one at a time. If the crash happens regardless of which metahuman you are using, then something must be wrong with the component itself. I would suggest disabling metahuman, and re-adding it to your engine.
