UE 5.4 – Landscape Mode active but Landscape editor panel not visible

I’m using Unreal Engine 5.4 (Windows).

When I switch to Landscape Mode, the viewport indicates that Landscape Mode is active, but the Landscape editor panel (Manage / Sculpt / Paint tools) does not appear anywhere in the interface.

What I’m experiencing:

  • Landscape Mode is selected (confirmed in the toolbar).

  • No Landscape creation panel appears.

  • No Sculpt/Brush settings are visible.

  • The right side only shows World Settings and Outliner.

  • The left-side Landscape tool panel is completely missing.

What I have already tried:

  • Window → Load Layout → Default Editor Layout (reset layout)

  • Manually reopening panels via Window menu (Details, Place Actors, etc.)

  • Creating a new level from scratch

  • Restarting the editor

The issue persists across new projects.

Has the Landscape editor UI location changed in UE 5.4, or is there a setting that specifically controls the Landscape tools panel visibility?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

That version:

Hello there @dreamtoreal!

Menues and layouts can be pain in UE, specially when they just refuse to show up. You already cleared to the default layout, and your screenshot shows that the landscape panel is not docked on the side, like this:

You can try to force it’s partner to show up, “Place Actors”, by clicking on it from the Window toolbar:

If that works, Landscape should be right next to it. If not, something’s really wrong with your current build. Now, resetting to default layout should fix this, but certain changes are not stored there. To truly reset the GUI, you should open the following folder in your system’s local app data:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\UnrealEngine\5.4\Saved\Config\WindowsEditor\

And there, delete the file “EditorLayout.ini”. Or you can delete the whole folder. Either way, once you restart the engine, it should generate a new layout file, where everything should be back to default.

If the issue still persists, one more option is to Verify your install for any missing pieces. Simply go to the launcher, open the dropdown menu, and click on Verify:

Once the process is completed, your UE install should work as intended. Yet, if the problem remains active still, then the only remaining path would be a full uninstall/reinstall of all Epic software from your system:

  • First, uninstall the engine, launcher, any asset packs, etc
  • Next, open the registry directory HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Epic Games\Unreal Engine\Builds, and delete any build entries
  • Finally, delete the folders %userprofile%\AppData\Local\UnrealEngine and %userprofile%\AppData\Local\UnrealHeaderTool
  • After that, no elements related to UE should be left in your system
  • Now, reinstall the UE launcher from scratch, and only add the engine version you need (in this case, 5.4)
  • After the process is complete, test opening a blank project, and check the Landscape mode
