UE 5.1 Material Preview Editor Window broken

Hi there,

i just wanted to post a bug that appears on several machines in our office that have 5.1 installed.

On every installation starting a scene from scratch shows a broken Material editor viewport.
With default setting it shows a unlit scene with “zero” base color. Turning off the “Show Environment” option in the “Preview Scene Settings” everything works. Turning it on again the “base color” is gone. It themes as if there is something wrong with the HDRI’s beeing displayed in the background. Maybe they are “blocking the light” or something.

Running into the same exact issue.

Same here.

This must be related to the HDRIbackdrop issue, introduced in 5.1, where the sky light doesn’t contribute to diffuse, only reflections. Basically, correctly lit scenes in 5.0 are now darker when using 5.1. The sky is not affecting illumination.

We’re also seeing this.

Yes i am having the same issue here. I’m glad its not just me. The odd thing, is that it worked fine for a while, and it suddenly broke. It is not just the material editor. The skeletal mesh/static mesh editors shows the same issue.

Yes, skeletal mesh doesn’t show any textures and cloth painting seems sporadic if it works or not.

This happends when enable lumen and Hardware Ray Tracing at the same time , as it for me . I figured out with closing Hardware Ray Tracing

If anyone is still having this issue, the answer is to turn off “ray traced skylight” in project settings.

Increase the size attribute on the HDR Backdrop to over 400. We need to fix this by default.
