I have recently got a new machine with the specifications below:
Processor: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i9-12900K 3.20 GHz
Installed RAM: 32.0 GB (31.7 GB usable)
OS: Windows 11 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT
I am using the latest twinmotion version 2023.1 Preview 1.
First, generally I noticed that the performance is significantly worse than my old machine. My old machine had an Nvidia GTX 1070 TI and was 5 years old at this point. So, I am confused on why the performance is so sluggish. Navigation and orbiting the scene is slow and has a lot of lag. I had to adjust the quality to Medium or lower to make the software usable.
Second, Exporting with path tracer takes significantly longer times. The export timer sometimes records 24 hours or so and keeps bouncing between different expectancy times till it finishes somehow.
Third, I had a file that was made 2 years ago using Twinmotion 2020. Twinmotion managed to open the file and upgraded it to 2023. I saved the file and closed the software. Now, every time I open the file twinmotion shows a black window and the PC completely freezes. Nothing works anymore. Mouse movement is frozen, and the PC becomes completely unresponsive, so I have to hard reboot my PC.
Everything is updated to the latest version as of today. I have tried many suggested fixes on the website, but nothing seems to fix or solve any of the problems above.
Any thoughts on why this is happening or any solution in the horizon?
Note: My colleague has the same device but with Nvidia 3080 instead of AMD. The files work remarkably well and doesn’t face any of the problems mentioned above. So, this leads me to believe that Twinmotion has a compatibility issue with AMD gpus. Is that a correct conclusion?
Update 1: I tried using Twinmotion 2022.2.3. I opened the file and upgraded it then saved and closed. I opened the file and it opened just fine and well. Mind you, the performance is still horrible and laggy but at least the file opened without crashing my PC.
Update 2: I tried reinstalling Twinmotion 2023.1 Preview 1. I tried opening the file again. This time, the PC doesn’t completely crash, However, Twinmotion immediately crashes the moment the file opens. I tried opening the original 2020 version file to convert it, and Twinmotion crashes the moment the file opens. Again, all of these files open and function properly on a similar machine but with Nvidia RTX or older GTX GPU. I attached the crash log file for reference.
Update 3: Today, I tried opening the original (2020 version) file again using the 2023 version. This time it opened successfully and Twinmotion didn’t crash. I saved the file and closed Twinmotion. I tired opening the upgraded file and the same thing happened. The PC froze, nothing is responsive. I had to hard reboot my PC. Generally, my take here is that there are many serious instability issues going on with the current 2023 version and a general issue with AMD GPUs. This could be related to the fact that it’s still a preview version, but that doesn’t cancel out the fact that Nvidia GPUs aren’t facing the same issues. I have tested these files on an RTX 3080 and GTX 1070 TI and they ran smoothly. Both 2022 and 2023 versions worked well with these GPUs. No lag, no crazy unstable export times, no strange PC crashes. Any thoughts or feedback is appreciated.
