Twinmotion crashes opening a file

Hi, I've been having this issue with a big file, it crashes most of the time I open it. Like I spent 3 hours just figuring out how to open the file and hoping it will open. Is a big file 2.7 Gb, but when it opens I can run it normally with everything set to low, and I can render the images and videos. But still is a pain to open it. I've tried updating the graphics card driver, also downgrading the driver, and changing the TdrDelay in the registry from 64 (default value) to 15, which sometimes works after restarting, but later the problem persists.

I've got this error when it crashes:

Fatal error: [File:Unknown] [Line: 684] pResource->Map(Subresource, pReadRange, reinterpret_cast<void**>(&pData)) failed at D:\tm\workspace\Release-2022.2\Engine\Source\Runtime\D3D12RHI\Private\D3D12RHIPrivate.h:1185 with error DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED with Reason: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_RESET

These are my laptop specs:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz

48 Gb of Ram

Nvidia Quadro RTX 5000 with Max-Q Design (16Gb)

The file is also stored in the main SSD for the fastest access. Hopping someone has a solution. 🙌

Hello ,

Thank you for posting in the community regarding this crashing issue. This is a GPU error and seems like you could be facing the Riva Tuner issue if that is installed otherwise I recommend you try adding a TdrDelay of 30 and see if that helps improve the issue.

If you are still having problems it could be that you need more RAM to work in this scene as it probably fits more the high-end requirements:

If you are able to share the scene please report a bug so we can investigate further with the scene in question and how it performs on our end.

Hi! I just wanna write that after a week of trial and error (and tears), I solved this issue following the steps from this other error

https://twinmotionhelp.epicgames.com/s/article/Twinmotion-Out-of-Video-Memory-Error?language=en_US#:~:text=This%20is%20due%20to%20the,other%20applications%20that%20are%20running.

Basically changing to DirectX 11, deleted more stuff that I didn't need, basically optimized the file, saved it, changed back to DirectX 12, and try to open it again, I did it a couple of times until I could open the file with DirectX 12 so I could render with the Path Tracer.

My file was 2.6 Gb and now is 2.1 Gb. At the end, I still don't know what am I lacking, ram or vram. Hope this helps someone else.

Sincerely,

Diego.

Thanks for your reply Vincent,

I've done the TdrDelay, with no success, which is weird since at least one time it worked last week. I also don't have any Riva Tuner or MSI Installed. My laptop is an Asus ProArt Studio Book 15 (W500GT-XS77), so I'm thinking to max out my ram to 64, right now I have 48.

I also opened a case in the bug reporter area, sharing the file with a google drive link since the file is too big to upload directly, hoping that you can come up with a definite solution.

Thanks once again for your answer,

Sincerely,

Diego.

Hello ,

Thank you for the follow-up and we just published an article that might help your current issue.

Please let me know if the instructions were helpful.

Hello ,

Thank you for the follow-up and glad to hear you were able to optimize the file to be able to open back in DirectX 12. I would definitely increase the RAM if you can as I think that would help. In order to be able to determine so, open the task manager and look at the performance tab when opening and working in your scene. Keep an eye on the memory then the GPU shared memory if any.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Vincent B.

Hi Vincent.

This link, along with many of the other articles linked in your replies, does not work. Is there any other way we can access this information?

Thank you,

I have the same crash error. But, I can open files using a external monitor (1 monitor mode) via HDMI ( I use a 4K monitor) then I can even switch to the laptop screen and work well. Weird but works. I hope it helps.

Same here. The weird thing is I can open scenes conected to a external screen (1 screen mode) and work well. I can even open a file, switch to my laptop screen and work well. The problem is opening a file on my laptop screen. It crashes. Even with low poly scenes. HP Omen Trascend 16" RTX 4070 8gb. 32GB RAM directX 12 enabled.

I finaly solved this by choosing “Nvidia RTX…” instead of “optimus” at my Nvidia control panel. Now I can open files in twinmotion and UE
