Twin Stick controls - Seperate movement and aim firection

I’m trying to make a twin stick shooter stylish game.

I can’t make the player move (with the left stick of the controller) while using the right stick to face/aim a different direction. Any ideas?

split them at the input level. left stick feeds add movement input with world direction vectors, right stick feeds only the facing: take the right stick x and y, build a vector, get rotation from it and set actor rotation yaw each frame when the stick magnitude passes a deadzone.

the part people miss: turn off controller rotation yaw on the character or the movement input fights the aim every tick. movement goes to the movement component, aim goes straight to actor rotation, they never share a path.

for reference, Top Down Space Shooter Game Template, a modular Blueprint and C++ starter project for Unreal Engine 5, has this split stick setup plus weapon switch in it already: Top Down Space Shooter Game Template — Modular Blueprint & C++ Starter Project | Fab

deadzone around 0.25 on the right stick or the ship spins whenever you breathe on it, learnt that one teh hard way.
