Twin Color (Official Music Video and Live Performance)

First time sharing a project here. It’s a bit of an odd one as I’m usually more on the technical side of things. I’m a graphics programmer by trade, working with Vulkan, OpenGL and more recently with Unreal. This project was a refreshing break from the usual C++ dev work but definitely belonging to the “I have no idea what I’m doing” realm for me.

After working together in the early 2010’s, I had the pleasure to work once more on a new live experience with the Mexican electronic producer Murcof. We initially contemplated building a video game as a companion to a potential album release. But after receiving production support from the amazing IRCAM, the project evolved toward a live performance where visuals would be driven by an autonomous system designed with Unreal Engine.

Almost two years later the project has seen many versions and variations around the same universe; from the early realtime version we premiered at IRCAM to the semi-realtime one we presented recently at Mutek Montreal. There has also been a VR standalone experience replicating in live what’s happening in the concert venue, an installation in a 360 dome with a very unique sound spatialization and more recently some album cover arts and a music video. The different variations of the project make extensive uses of procedural systems and tools I’ve developed along the way, whether through C++, early PCG versions or Houdini HDAs. More recently, I also had the pleasure to bring my former colleague and friend, Robert Hodgin to work on the alien flora/fauna with Houdini and Houdini Engine.

I hope you guys find this interesting.

Hello @simong ! Welcome to posting with us here on the forums!

I found this a couple of days ago and have had them on repeat on YouTube while I idly clean. Something is calming about the scenes and music that have made me mesmerized. I love this dreamy kind of overlay that they both seem to have. Is it just atmospheric lighting or some kind of filter you used to get this effect?

Hi @The_M0ss_Man, thanks for the kind words.

I’m not sure what contributes the most to the dreamy look, but for sure tons of fog and lots of blur is a good start. There’s a lot of post-processing going on, starting with compute shaders inside Unreal and finishing in Davinci Resolve. As the project started as realtime, most of it was done in Engine but as the project progressed some of it was moved to Resolve. The grain and lens effects probably also help selling that look. I can try giving a more detailed breakdown if that interests you.
