[TUTORIAL] How to Set Up a Basic RNG (Random Number Generator) Device in Your Fortnite Creative/ UEFN Game

How to Set Up a Basic RNG (Random Number Generator) Device in Your Game

Creating a fun and engaging gameplay experience often requires a touch of randomness to keep things fresh and unpredictable. A Random Number Generator (RNG) device can be the perfect tool to introduce such randomness in your game setup. In this guide, we’ll walk through the steps to set up an RNG device that will trigger two random instances when activated.

Step 1: Gather Your Devices

For this setup, you’ll need the following devices:

  • Random Number Generator
  • Timer
  • Round Setting Device
  • Two Triggers

Step 2: Configure the Random Number Generator

Begin with the Random Number Generator settings as follows:

  • Value Limit: 1
  • Value Limit: 2 ( if you need more slots, increase this number)
  • Winning Value: 4
  • Roll Time: 4 seconds (Adjust this as needed)
  • Reset After Use: On
  • Reset Delay: Instant
  • Zone Direction: Right (or your preferred direction)
  • Dimensions: Length: 9, Width: 2, Height: 3.0
  • Visible during Game: On (or Off if preferred)
  • Activating Team: Any
  • Enabled During Phase: Always

Ensure that the ‘Enable when Receiving From’ is set to activate using a Round Setting Device at the round start, and ‘Activate When Receiving From’ is set to a Timer upon completion.

Your Settings should look something like this

Random Number Generator
( pick two random instances set up )

ALL OPTIONS

Value Limit: 1
Value Limt: 2 (Add more choices other than 2)
Winning Value: 4
Roll Time: 4 Seconds ( increase this if you need to)
Pick Each Number Once: No
Reset After Use: On
Reset Delay: Instant
Award Score: Never
Zone Direction: Right ( you can set this in which ever direction you prefer)
Length: 9
Width: 2
Height: 3.0
Visible during Game: On (you can turn this off, if you prefer)
Activating Team: Any
Enabled During Phase: Always
Activate on Phase: None

FUNCTIONS

Enable when Receiving From
Set this to enable using a round setting device on round start

Activate When Receiving From
Set this to a Timer : On Completed

Step 3: Set Up the Timer

Adjust the timer to activate at the game/round start, specifying the desired wait time before activating the RNG Device. Ensure it’s set to reset upon completion.

Step 4: Install the Triggers

Place the triggers in the designated slots found in the RNG Device, with each trigger set to activate an event. Ensure these are set to trigger with a sequencer and damage.

Step 5: Define Your Rewards

With the triggers in place, set them to grant whatever rewards you choose, be it weapons ( using an item granter) , teleportation , or class/team changes using the Class Designer and Class Selector Devices.

Step 6: Round Activation

Ensure that with every new round, the timer restarts, activating the RNG device and granting the set rewards through the triggers.

Now, your RNG device is all set to add that element of unpredictability to your gameplay, making each round unique and thrilling. For more detailed information on the Random Number Generator in the Epic Developer Centre.

By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to creating a dynamic gaming environment with a touch of randomness in every round.

Hi @Irishlad7079

Great Question!

When you set up your RNG Device, you will find that it will have a light blue box sprouting from it. Within this blue box, that appears like a translucent hologram, you will see , or should see, divided sections representing the Value Limit. Inside of these divided sections is where you would want to place your triggers, as stated in the tutorial:

Place the triggers in the designated slots found in the RNG Device, with each trigger set to activate an event. Ensure these are set to trigger with a sequencer and damage.

To answer your second question :

Also does this make it automatic?

This tutorial enables the RNG device when receiving a signal at round start from the Round Setting device, however the RNG device will not activate or start until the timer is successful. As stated here:

Ensure that the ‘Enable when Receiving From’ is set to activate using a Round Setting Device at the round start, and ‘Activate When Receiving From’ is set to a Timer upon completion.

If you want it to start automatically, then you can set the RNG device to activate at round start from the Round Settings Device or any other device you feel comfortable using.

Hope that helps and thanks for checking out my tutorial!

Hi, How do i ensure that the RNG doesn’t repeat the same numbers in a game.

For example:

I have 4 maps and 4 rounds .
So using RNG , the game session would be like:

Round 1 : map 2 → Round 2 : map 1 → Round 3: map 4 → Round 4: map 3

(note : the numbers aren’t repeating which is exactly what i want)

I don not want the RNG to repeat a previously generated number. How do I ensure that ?
