It is possible, but 95% of that there is unusable in games without editing. Even best “studios” that are doing commercial models often do not care about uvs, or merging objects or topology.

So even if you buy one you need to do editing, but if you can edit and fix such model when you bothering with buying it.

It needs to be optimized for whatever you’re using it for, that usually means it needs to have a lower polygon count which might mean that it needs normal maps created for details. Also, you would need to recreate the material, and make sure things are scaled correctly. If you want to be able to drive the vehicle then it also has to be rigged for animation and then when you bring it into UE4 you’d need to set up the vehicle controls.

Unity assets will have the same issue, though they’re more likely to have a good poly count since they’d be designed for a game already.

There’s no program designed specifically for weapons, you would just use a regular 3D program, Blender is a good place to start since it’s free.

Just as a little hint, if you are browsing Turbosquid, search for “game ready” and you will be displayed a list of models mostly suitable for gaming use.

You’ll normally be supplied with the model and some texture maps which you will need to import to UE4. I wouldn’t worry too much about the actual material it’self, just create the material in UE4 using the maps that came with the model.

As darth has pointed out, you cant use any old model that you find.

A lot of the models you see on TS are high poly models used for non real-time application and are really not optimised for games use.

Even if a model on TS is “low poly”, it doesn’t mean it’s suitable for games use. It may be low poly, but they may have used individual textures for every single different material and use lots of separate different meshes.

Game ready models are quite a bit different.

The mesh for a start are normally striped of as many vertices as possible without causing deformation. Whereas high-poly models will be left as a quad mesh for sub-division purposes. Professional game ready models will normally use a single set of maps for the entire model instead of having lots of different textures. An attempt will be made to make the model a single mesh as it renders faster.

The list goes on, but you get my drift. My point is, real-time and high poly focused models are very different.

Going over my original TS tip, search for game ready and you’ll get something come up that is suitable for games use. Provided they have FBX, then you are sorted. You can mess about with materials, scaling in UE4 (Not ideal though!). If they only have some other exchange format, you can convert it in software such as Blender.

As darth also mentioned, Blender is a good shout. It’s open source and a very powerful piece of software. Some even argue that it’s better than the expensive suites, with pretty valid reasoning. Learning to model isn’t terribly difficult. It’s a long journey of learning, but it’s an interesting one.

If you are a programmer, sometimes doing some modelling for your game is a nice brain brake after doing some intense coding :slight_smile:

It’s more down to your skill rather than the program. If you aren’t concerned about cost then most people would use Maya/3ds Max

It depends on how many hours it will take, an 3D artist working at a studio would make something like $30 an hour
