Trying to make a frog-like ballooning vocaliziation animation for a monster- is Blender Cloth sim the right way?

Hi there!

I’m working on a First-person survival horror project, and right now I’m at the stage where I’m animating some of the models I’ve created. This is based in Unreal Engine 5.

I’m relatively new to all of this, despite having a technical background, so while I’m pretty good at getting most things done/learning from tutorials, I definitely struggle with how to approach some of the more, uh, odd things I’m trying to do.

Basically, one of the enemies has a frog-like vocal sac that I’d like to animate- basically something like a frog croaking. However, I’m wanting this to be fairly realistic (as the bounciness is pretty creepy in and of itself in the right context) so I’m trying to figure out the right way to approach the work.

So far the only thing I’ve been able to come up with a cloth sim in blender, which I have looking fairly good, but I’m unsure of the best way to export the animation to Unreal, as it only seems to work as separate objects, and so far I’ve been unable to export the cloth sim’s animation properly.

My next thought is that I might just need to step through the animation and export the mesh from blender in “frames” and then blend between the meshes somehow, but this also kind of sounds like a stretch.

Is there some kind of tool out there for things like this? Or am I already on the right path here? I’m grateful for any help or ideas, even if it’s something obvious and I’m just being a doofus here and there’s a much simpler way.

Also trying to figure out the best/most performant way to render feathers on a moving mesh in Unreal, but this is what I’m the most stuck on.

Hey @PraetorWest! Welcome to the forums!

I think from what you are describing, your best bet here is likely morph targets, which has built in support and application in the engine. Check out this documentation and non-Epic affiliated video on the subject:

I hope the above is the solution you were looking for!

This is perfect!! I knew it had to be something I was missing/hadn’t gotten experience with yet. The name sounded promising but I hadn’t gotten there yet in my research.

Thank you so much! (And love the username- weirdly apt, since there’s a evolved Quetzalcoatlus enemy I have to work on next that will also need this. :joy: What are the chances?)
