I tried (well kind of made it) to make mobile game, my problems with unreal for mobiles:
- api size limit was 120mb, empty unreal project took 90mb
- lighting (for performance), but it was 10 years ago so probably not as bad now, i did unlit with fake phone lighing
- very limited space for game assets
- doing backend (like making store api just a downloader, and renting some proffesional servers to deliver actual game was out of budget (which was zero) for that project
- touch interface, well it was total mess in unreal 4.12 or so.
- deploying to apple store required apple device, also testing requires smartphone and something for android. Which means hardware and $$$
- and last thing about mobiles, my friend almost melted/burned his phone screen (was quite weak even back then), however there is risk that your customer will just melt phone while playing your gme on it (unreal is quite demanding).
So any info on expected size, genre, art style etc? This determines assets required, and artists that can create them. And getting artist to work for free is almost impossible (they finally learned to not give their time for free).
Also ideas for target customers/gamers, imo best is some niche audience that is starving for some type of game, for eg. VR games that do not require much movement, as some people who bought VR discovered they have really hard nausea while moving in VR, so that is great but tiny (and i know such game would not sell well) target audience
