TLS Point cloud missing blocks of data

Hi,
I have some holes on my Leica RTC360 data after attempting to mesh the scene:
Using this version:

I have not used RC for a couple of years, but I used to load much larger point clouds and never saw this issue back then.
I have also meshed this very same data on a competitor’s product and it came out as expected.
To me it looks some kind of of software issue, as I have tried on 2 different machines and got missing tiles on different areas.

The lowest specced of the machines has:

  • Intel (R) Xeon(R) Gold 6136 CPU @ 3.00GHz
  • 128GB (4*32) of ECC 2666 Ram
  • Nvidia Quadro P4000

Hi,

did you get any kind of warning that parts were missing? Also how does the mesh look in solid mode?

edit: if you did get a missing parts warning, please try:

  1. Use a reconstruction region
  2. set the Minimal distance between two vertices (Reconstruction settings - Mesh calculation) to some value, e.g. 0.001
  3. Raise the number of Maximal vertex count per part (Reconstruction settings - Advanced) to higher value, e.g. 10M or 20M
  4. If there are still missing parts, please try to change the RECONSTRUCTION REGION slightly, say +10-15 % bigger and rotate it by say 10-15 degrees.

Found where I went a bit too greedy on my settings.
Lowered the maximum vertices per part and lo and behold it now works.

However, failing silently is the worst type of failure. Perhaps the user might appreciate a warning if there was some overflow of any type and a block gets discarded?

Hi,

thank you very much for the info and the feedback I will be passing this on. What value had you raised the max vertices per part to? Also was your component scaled or georeferenced?

Hi Wallace,

I had raised the max vert per part to 200M In an attempt to get much fewer parts to deal with.
It worked with 50M per part in the end.

The component’s scale was defined by the Lidar scanner. 1 Unit = 1 meter with no geoid corrections being applied prior to using WGS84 on RC.
