Hello everyone, I am currently trying to create modular 3d objects to create my level for a game. Can anyone share any thoughts, tips, sites, or personal experience on how to do these things vertically and horizontally?
For example, I have such modules:
I recommend looking for art that you think looks good, either in a game, or on the marketplace.
Then study the screen shots in more detail, and figure out how they did it.
You might even want to buy one or two marketplace assets that you think look good, so you can pick them apart in detail and learn from them.
I find that this is often a good use of Marketplace money – I may not use the asset in the end, but I can always learn something by looking up how someone else did it. (Worst case, it can serve as a bad example )

As far as I understand, this person made the stairs as high as the wall itself, and the angle of the stairs is very high, I think it does not suit me.
Try playing around with half-heights. You’d need half-height walls and possibly partitions/windows to make it all work out, but I’ve seen that in other model sets, and it works alright. It does require more assets, of course – nothing is free
You’ll probably also want one-and-a-half height pieces, and maybe both half-height ramps/slants as well as full-height ramps/slants, to make them all come together.
Half-height is interesting for making crawl spaces, too, as well as height-and-a-half for a slightly bigger feel.
I think I understood why I don’t like what comes out. My main wall is 6 units long. The wall that I wanted to make for the “stairs” is 3 units long. And if make the height of the stairs half the height of the wall, it turns out that the angle is too sharp. So what sizes are the best to take?
I highly recommend modeling in Unreal units. 100 units == 1 meter, and a typical gameplay “block” might be 3 meters wide/tall. (I’ve also seen 2.5 meters, which is cramped, and 4 meters, which is quite spacious.)
So, with 3 meters (300 units) tall blocks, you could make each step 300, 150, 100, 75, 60, or 50 units. The shallower you make the ramp, the more variant options you need to create to make it possible to fit it all together. For example, for 100 units rise, you need 3 different heights of walls, and possibly another 2 for the double-heights, and then multiply that all out by whatever you do for ramps and walls and floors (especially if you model them attached, instead of separate.)
Another option is to still make everything rise a full block, but model a 900 units long staircase. (or 600x600 spiral, or whatever.) There’s no law that every unit must be exactly the same floor area, as long as they’re all multiples of the base.
Thanks for the info! My “game wall” is now 4m high and 6m long (but it’s easy to do in 3m). I chose 4m high because I thought 3m wouldn’t be enough. If I understand correctly, it is best to model under 3x3x3 dimensions? I still don’t understand what you mean:
Can you show this with a visual example, or provide a site where it is described in more detail?
You’ll note that these pieces are full height, 2/3 height, and 1/3 height.
If you use 4 meter size, you might want to make full height, 3/4 height, 1/2 height, and 1/4 height.
You will need to make slanted walls, and fitting/filling sections, that match up all the different combinations. You’ll also want to set your grid to match – although in this case, a grid of 100 will work fine and snap perfectly.
I don’t know about web sites that describe modular assets in detail, although I’m sure there are plenty – I learned about it back when Game Developer magazine still showed up on paper
Many thanks for the information. I will probably then remodel the walls to a height of 3m, and make the ceiling a shape, so that I can add some height if I need it. Or I will not touch the height, and I will change the width to 4m and then I will convert other models to these dimensionsThanks again for the information and personal experience!
To be clear: Doing the same thing, but four different heights, is totally reasonable, too!
It’s just a little more work
If you want 4 meters height for looks or gameplay (or 8 meters, even) then you should absolutely do that.
