This Old Shack

I created this game because I wanted to rethink how crafting systems work (basically an inventory-less crafting system) and I did not want to have to worry about character creation (it’s just really time-consuming) so I made this:

Basically my goals are:

  • No human characters
  • Everything you look at should look like a Bob Ross painting
  • Mundane tasks should be fun

Anyways hopefully I’ve succeeded. Let me know what you think!

Hey mate. I really like the looks and the feel! The skybox is amazing, the tree breaking is simple but well made and the little shed is just so cozy. Very well done! Animations can be improved - but I also leave that to the end since it’s not my thing! Thanks for sharing.

This gave me OG The Forest vibes. The creepy creaky door definitely didn’t help with the paranoia spooky vibes. Then you went and refilled the teapot and the game went from kind of eerie to beautiful and bright.

Are there any survival aspects to this project or will it mainly be crafting and exploration?

Thanks, that’s super helpful! I wasn’t looking for a creepy vibe so much as a palpable sense of isolation, so maybe that’s hard to distill from a 4 minute video, but maybe it also means I have some work to do.

As for survival aspects I would say that at it’s heart the game is ultimately a survival game. I planned to have seasons and was thinking of winter as almost like a boss battle if you will. Each year you get less and less supplies but depending on how well you did the previous year you also get upgrades. But ultimately the functional point of the game is to not die from starvation, dehydration, hypothermia, exposure, animal attacks, disease (hence the boiling water), and water ever else could kill you living alone in the woods.

Also I wonder if it gave you The Forest vibes because when I built the mechanics for cutting down trees that was actually the game I thought of. I was just too lazy to remove chunks from the base of the tree.
