Thermal Scan Concept - Post Processing effect.

Put together a Thermal Scan effect, which is achieved through Post Processing, Material Parameter Collection and Sequencer. This doesn’t have to be black and white but for the example it showcased the effect best.

I think it may be too difficult to breakdown how this effect is achieved at the moment. Just did a bit of Contrast Masking and Scene-Texture Manipulating. This is a very basic version of what I wanted to do. Will mess around with it a bit more over the next few days.

I also have it where it can highlight any emissive materials. So could be used for some neat stuff!

Looks sweet, excited to see what you end up using this for!

Nice! What inspired this effect? Was there a game you wanted to do?
If you ever do a tutorial on how you did it, I’m sure everyone here would be interested

Thank you, I was messing around a lot with masking and screentexture nodes and wanted to see if I could isolate a line and adjust the range to cover an area. Similar to games where they have spatial awareness or abilities that ping enemies behind walls. The best example of this is when players knock players into DBNO and use shakedown and it pings their teammates.

Happy to cover this in a tutorial at some point when I figure out a more efficient and optimised way of doing this with more flexibility. Currently it’s only in black and white. Still figuring out all the moving parts to it but it could be applied to a lot of scenarios which I think will be extremely useful!

This effect is visually so pretty! You said you can use it to highlight emissive materials? Does this mean a player could use the scanner effect to reveal hidden pickups /POIs / clues? In Core, my programming partner and I used a scanner effect in a hidden object mystery game. In our game, the player could scan the environment to reveal hidden glowing rune decals for a puzzle. I love hidden object games. If you end up making a tutorial I would love to see it!

This silhouette style reminds me of the platformer game Limbo! You could do a really cool FFA with just a limited ping of the view scanner! So players can hide in the shadows, but every 30 seconds or so you could see with the scanner or even with flashlights/torches/weapon fire.

Looks great! I wouldn’t mind checking out the tutorial if you get the chance to do it.
