What to name the characters… what should I name the game… what are the location names… names names names. Is it just me or is naming one of the most harder things about developing a game?
Especially the title of the game. Should I just hire a marketing think tank firm to name my game? I need something that is simple, easy to remember, represents what the game is about, and has “resonance” with the targeted market. Oh, and it can’t already be in use by another game!
I think I would rather create a C++ plugin that did a “1-click Game Maker” plugin that created an entire game for you. It would be easier? (And I know nothing of C++)
For a game title, go onto english.stackexchange , and ask for a word or phrase to describe: ________ , and maybe put a part of your game’s story, or something that happens. I’ve gotten some great words from doing that.
I have to agree, names are always the most difficult thing when developing a game -> they have to fit together (main name, name of the world,…), they should be unique, they should represent the game,…
I personally always recommend to sit in front of a piece of paper and write down every name that comes to your mind. After that you can decide (either alone or with some friends/a community)
I always thought the names were just words out of the head. Specially the names of locations etc. in fictional movies. As an example the names of locations in Lord of the Rings are one of the most impressive.
Though the author put effort into inventing whole languages, with rules creating a theme for the language in question to fit what you should feel when reading it.
And that’s why it’s impressive.
Though the point being never choose a name out of the head just because it might sound awesome. It has to have a good reason behind it.
The names are all randomized, although the ending part of a name is always picked from a predefined list based on real and fictional versions. This randomization does mean some names may not work very well, depending on what type of language and culture you’re going for.
The first 5 names in this generator are generally shorter than the last 5, so those names suffer less from the stranger randomization results than the last 5. kingdom name generator
