You should communicate more often. Because the enterprise team heard differently. Big News - "Project Nile" 3ds Max Eporter Plugin - Architectural and Design Visualization - Epic Developer Community Forums
I did say “as far as I’m aware”
Different teams often work on things I’m not privy to so that’s cool news and I look forward to it just like the community then!
Fortnite definitely uses DFAO, but I thought it also uses DFGI. It’s has to be all dynamic lighting due the player building things, do you think it would look so good without any GI? Epic has DFGI, and the rest of Fortnite graphics is pretty simple, so I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t enable DFGI on Ultra settings for those running a GPU like a 1080 ti.
HFGI is not used by any Epic project that I know of apart from the kite demo. And as you said, its broken.
My thinking would be that, especially for a game with Fortnite’s visual style, dynamic GI is sort of a near-pointless extravagance - there don’t appear to be a lot of scenarios in there that you can’t get a good enough result with dynamic shadows, good AO and fill lights. Also, as far as I’m aware they’ve stopped working on DFGI altogether, which wouldn’t make sense if Fortnite was going ahead with it.
Would be cool to get this confirmed/denied by someone on the FN team
Hey, and what about skeletal meshes? Simple cascades?
Fornite use a lot of WPO animations, that is not working with any DF as far as I know…
You can use a little bit of WPO without noticing any artifacts. For instance the “jiggle” when you hit something. If the WPO is too great, you’ll notice more self-shadowing artifacts.
Originally there was a setting Distance Field Bias that was used to shrink the generated DF mesh to help reduce these kinds of artifacts, but that has since been removed.
It’s pretty much a certainty that Fortnite is not using DFGI. DanielW stopped working on it exactly two years ago to instead focus on performance optimization. My hope is that he will get the chance to continue developing it soon though, now that both Fortnite and Paragon are in good shape.
Okay, thanks!
The rumor has it that Fable 4 is back in development (although different studio is working on it now). Hopefully they still use UE4 and hopefully they will stick with real-time GI, finish it and it will trickle down UE4 launcher version.
