The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford | An Unreal Engine study | Part 1

Hi everyone, here are a few cinematic shots from my latest Unreal Engine cinematic study, based on one of my all-time favorite Westerns shot beautifully by Roger Deakins.

Stills:

This was created entirely in UE 5.5, rendered using Lumen with a Substrate workflow, no pathtracing. I used Ultra Dynamic Sky for the cloud timelapse shots. Graded in Davinci Resolve (ACES)

Soundtrack: Nick Cave and Warren Ellis: The Money Train

Additional software’s:
3Ds Max
Substance Painter
Houdini

I’ll be sharing more updates on my Instagram for anyone interested

Hi there @JayHPatel,

Hope you’re well and having a great week so far

Had to pop in just to compliment the “vibe” of this. The lighting and music created such a haunting and emotional ambiance. Truly beautifully done. Did something specific inspire this project or was it solely just a bit of practice?

Hi @PresumptivePanda, Happy New Year! Hope you’re doing well

Thank you for the kind words, I’m glad you like it! Well, I had been meaning to recreate a few scenes from this film in UE for a while now but didn’t feel like I was there yet in terms of my skill level.

It’s a beautiful film and there’s a lot to learn from the cinematography and I thought it would perfect for some UE practice and serve as a cinematic study. I’ll be exploring more shots during my free time, trying to balance character and env shots. Lumen looks incredible in 5.5 and I’m excited to tackle some more VDB heavy shots next

Oooh that sounds really exciting. I hope you’ll share it with us here on the forums when you complete it. I’d love to see what you can create
