When crafting each character, a short backstory is written to inspire the many nuances that go into visualising someone.

Cody:

Cody never talks about the Corps unless someone insists, and even then, he keeps it shaved down to facts; anything more than that is a live grenade. He works nights unloading trucks at a grocery depot. The rhythm helps: lift, stack, breathe, repeat, a quiet drill that doesn’t ask him to remember. But memory doesn’t need permission. A forklift drops a slate, and his body is already somewhere else, jaw clenched, eyes scanning exits, hands searching for a weapon that isn’t there, until he forces himself to name what’s real: the cold concrete under his boots, the barcode scanner chirping, the fluorescent hum. He keeps a list folded in his wallet, like a field manual for civilian life: call his sister, drink water, don’t skip the appointment, go sit by the river when the walls start moving in. Some mornings he watches the sun crawl up over the city like it’s negotiating a ceasefire, and he tells himself the same thing he used to tell his squad, softer now, aimed inward: you made it through the night, so take the next step.
