Texturing Terrain - Black Texture

I am having a bit of trouble with texturing terrain. I set up the terrain texture with layerblends (followed this tutorial - Texturing a Landscape in UE4 (Unreal Engine 4) - YouTube) but for some reason the preview shows the texture as black. This means that once I create the terrain it is black and I have to paint each square in the terrain individually. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or alternatives to make it easier to paint the textures.

Sorry, the images were over 524 KBs.

Hi adamb,

That is intended functionality. The way your material is setting up you technically have not told it what its base material should be, so it assumes that you want the base material to be black and that you will add other materials on top of it.

Is their a way I could make the terrain be a certain texture at first but still be able to paint on the terrain with other textures?

I’m going to keep digging as I want to say there is, but at least at present the best I could do was increase the preview weight to 1.0 on one of the layers, which will show that layer as the landscape texture until you actually begin painting, then it returns to the black texture.

Any news?X) im having the same problem right now…super annoying. Just black! Im using a splatmap and i dont want to paint…(also used same tutorial)

Hey guys,

That tutorial video is out of date, I would recommend our new tutorial video here: Getting Started with Landscapes | Live Training | Unreal Engine - YouTube

You will see in the video all you need to do is create layer info then right click on the material you want to be visible and select (Fill layer).

After this the landscape will no longer be black.

Go to 58:49 in the video to see what I’m talking about.

Let me know if that helps,

Ed
