Texture,Texels, and running out of memory

Hi,

I did a scan of a manequin, using 150 photos.
I need one 8x8k Texture, but CR always gave me a 2x2k
Someone here in the forum suggested lowering the texel value to achieve highter texture resolution.

so with 0.0002 I get a 2k texture
with 0.00015 I get a 4k texture, half of it empty
and with 0.0001 I alway run out of memory. - with 24gig of ram.

I would appreciate if you could explain how this texture-texel stuff works, why I have to set it manually, and what I could do to get my crisp 8k texture.

thanks

Try unwrapping with these settings.

RC will make best use of the available texture space.

Hi nrsz

Can you please make a screenshot like ShadowTail, form the UNWRAP tool ?

First I unwrap, this generates the UV Map, right? Then I make a texture.
I used your settings- It just gives me a 2048x2048 texture.

Hi nrsz

Change the STYLE to FIXED TEXEL SIZE and set OPTIMAL TEXEL VALUE in TEXEL VALUE and set 4k-8k Tx and report back ( click on MODEL to get detailed info after UNWRAP is done )

Ok I tried with two different fixed Texel sizes:

Suggested optimal Texel size 0.002856:

a.PNG

And custom Texel size 0,0005:

b.PNG

So it seems lowering Texel size does increase the Texture. I already read that in another thread.
But why is it so hard to get a crisp 8k texture? I have ~150 photos with 20 closeups of the model.
I am still not satisfied with the texture quality.

I am calculating the texture on a reduced model with 60k triangles. Has that anything to do with it?
Align -> Normal Model -> Simplify -> Smooth -> Unwrap -> Texture -> Export. That ok?

Might it be the case that your chosen texture size is way more than RC needs for 100% texture quality?

There is only so much detail that can be extracted given the number of source images and their resolution.

Hi nrsz

If youuse OPTIMAL TEXEL value, then you get best possible NATURAL-REAL resolution, if you use lower values it will be just upscaled-interpolated. Texture size just define Tx resolution, not acual texel size. so if you set say 16k then you get say 15 % filled with actual Tx and its OK as there is no actual data that coudl fil the 16k Tx space. If you set 4K then can get say to 85 % and 2 x 4k Tx, if youset 8k res then you get just say 30 % fill as again there is no actual data to be placed on the Tx.

hm…take a look at my photos.

this is the source material:

and this is the texture when using “optimal texel value”

the closeup photos are of course detected and aligned correctly.

Hi nrsz

Its possible to get the data for inspection ? RCPROJECT + Images ?

thanks for the offer

I guess you need all the photos and project files… that will be roughly 7gb.’
I will split it up and send it to you, but tomorrow.

thanks

Hi nrsz

Size is OK.
