Terrain Physics Creation Question

Hey,
When I was young I used to play a game called “Clonk Rage”. I´m currently planning on developing a game like it as a hobby but at the moment I do not have any idea how I would create a Terrain / Physics Engine like that. In “Clonk Rage” there were multiple types of terrain with different physical states. My problem is I don´t even know how I should call it.
