Tenebris Somnia: The Retro Survival Horror with Live Action Cutscenes 👁️

Hello dev community!

TobĂas Rusjan here from Saibot Studios.

I want to share with you the game we’re creating with my partner Andrés Borghi since 2022. We received an Epic MegaGrant back in 2023 and thanks to that we have been able to keep the project alive.

The game is called Tenebris Somnia, it’s a 2D pixelated survival horror (yeah, made in UE4) with live action cutscenes. Check it out!

On more recent news, we’ve signed a partnership with New Blood and Airdorf Games to publish Tenebris Somnia on Steam and consoles.

The game is still in development, but we have a demo available on Steam in case you want to try it.

We’re a team of 6 developers from Argentina and a bunch of people from the film industry. I’m in charge of programming the game using blueprints and project direction. In another post, I’ll be sharing some development aspects of the project.

Below are some screenshots from the game and cinematics:

Hope you like what we’re cooking here. Let me know what you think.

Cheers guys!

And by the way, here’s the post the development of the game, including how we’re creating this 2D pixelated game using Unreal Engine:

Hi there @TobiasRusjan ! Welcome back to posting with us here on the forums!

Watching your trailer gave me such chills! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game, aside from old school point and click style games, do something like this. I’m very excited to follow along with the development.

If I may ask, will there be multiple endings or perhaps special scene unlockables if you make certain choices?

Very cool! I remember seeing this on an Alpha Beta Gamer video a while back. Looks very unique and ambitious. As a bonus, it’s always fun seeing 2D games in Unreal! I’ll give the demo a whirl later this week.

Hi! Thank you!

Yes, we want the game to have multiple endings but with decisions you make when you’re getting close to the end of the story. And of course, different endings will give you different cinematics.

We also want to add secrets with rare cinematics, but we need to finish the main story first.

And finally, there’s a bunch of behind-the-scenes material so maybe we can have something out of that as well at some point.

Cheers!

Thank you! Please do and let me know what you think. We have updated the demo recently with new content. Cheers!

Hello again @TobiasRusjan !

That honestly sounds amazing. Behind-the-scenes bonus content could always be a fun addition if it’s something you’d like to include. I can’t wait to see the development grow and truly wish you the best with your team and development! Keep up the awesome work. :star_struck:

Had a lot of fun with the demo. Was much more fleshed out than I was expecting. You’ve taken me from curious to actively waiting for the the final release. Wishlisted!

Hi there @TobiasRusjan,

Hope you’re well and having a great week so far

First, I’m completely obsessed with the art style. It’s so charming and nostalgic. Secondly, the “vibe” of the game is seriously so cool. Genuinely impressed  Is there currently any ETA on a release date?

Hello guys! Sorry for the late responses, I don’t know why I didn’t get notified about your comments.

Thank you! We would also love to have some kind of documentary at some point, maybe after the release of the game. Since we have a lot of behind the scenes material for the live action sessions, we think that would be awesome. But like anything, it takes time, money and dedication, and right now we need to put all of that into development.

That’s awesome! Glad you have played the demo, liked and wishlisted it. Looking forward to the final release as well, cheers!

Hey! Thanks a lot for those lovely words :heart_hands:

We’re aiming to late this year. But can’t confirm nothing yet, since there’s still plenty of work to do. Once we finish shooting the cutscenes, we will be able to have a more proper view of the project milestones in general. And we can say we are about 70% with shootings, but there’s also the game itself of course.

Anyway, everything is coming together pretty well so far, so it’s just a matter of time.

Cheers from the dev team!

Also, here’s a recap video I do all the years talking about what we have been doing in 2024 for Tenebris Somnia. It’s in my native language Spanish, but I specially made English subtitles in case you want to check it out:
