Techniques for Texturing a Massive Terrain Mesh

Got a question.

Would it be possible to create a very large terrain (47km / 29mi sq) in Maya, and for texturing, break it up into, say, squares of 10x10 or 15x15, and then texture each piece with a hi-rez texture, coordinated with the adjacent tiles, and bring all of this into UE?

Or, perhaps one large mesh, but using a UDIM workflow with, say, 100 tiles?

Or, is it preferable to use the layering technique instead on a single, large mesh?

I’d use the landscape actor, but it does not seem to be able to hold the poly resolution I need. (At least it didn’t in my last attempt at it.)
