Talks And Demos: How NASA is Using Immersive Technology for Design and Training | Unreal Fest Orlando 2025

In this session recorded at Unreal Fest Orlando 2025, NASA presents a deep dive into how Unreal Engine was used to create a VR simulation of the Gateway Space Station.

The Center for Design and Space Architecture (CDSA) at NASA is dedicated to advancing human-centered design for space exploration. As part of this mission, the CDSA’s Virtual Reality (VR) team has developed a high-fidelity VR simulation of the Gateway Space Station, utilizing Nanite technology to integrate large polygon-count meshes of spaceflight hardware and equipment.

This cutting-edge VR platform allows for detailed exploration and evaluation of the station’s interior design. Through Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) testing, astronauts simulate daily tasks—such as conducting scientific experiments, retrieving supplies, and preparing meals—replicating real-world scenarios that will occur during the Artemis missions.

These immersive simulations combine virtual models with astronaut input, providing invaluable insights th
