Suggestions for displaying models in browser?

Hello,

CapturingReality has done a wonderful job creating a very lifelike representation from my photos.  However, when I upload to Sketchfab, it really loses its quality.  Smooth surfaces become rough, glossy surfaces become “muddy”, it no longer looks “real” (even when I don’t optimise size for Sketchfab on the upload).

Are there any suggestions for displaying models generated in CapturingReality in a browser, but maintaining the very high display quality that you get native in the application? File format doesn’t matter - I only care about the display quality.

Many thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Best Regards,

Edward

Yes, you can : you have to switch to an unlit shader by choosing “Shadeless” as the Shading on the General panel of your 3d settings in Sketchfab. In that case there is no light in your scene, and the geometry and normals are ignored.

Wow - that did the trick!!  Thank you very much!

Aww I knew that trick. I wanted an alternative.

What kind of alternative ?

You can usually go 2 routes with photogrammetric generated models :

  1. the easiest is the “unlit”, that is quite permissive with normals, surface noise, etc. That is basically what you have in RC.

  2. the lit option : in that case you need to have good normals (not too noisy) because the noise is much more noticeable when the model’s surfaces are lit that way. So it usually requires some editing and surface and normals smoothing to have a good result. And you will also need a proper delighting of the textures (which can be as a first approximation as simple as a high pass filter, but requires more work if you want really good results)

Nah, I meant another web page. Maybe with a higher limit.

Only alternative I’ve seen is to put your model in Unity and deploy it as WebG on your own web space.

Bit of mucking around, plus I’m sure there are a heap of optimisations that SketchFab have done to make their viewer not  explode your web browser.

You can use Marmoset Toolbag to export to their WebGL 3D model viewer, Marmsoset Viewer. You can host the viewer on your own website or on Artstation for free (Artstation has size limits though). There is also a free version of the Marmoset viewer that clients can download for viewing your models locally.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Here’s a link to my blog that shows the material settings in Toolbag for models exported directly form photogrammetry apps, like RealityCapture.
