If you’re experiencing overly dark reflections on your model in Unreal Engine, here are some steps to try to improve the situation:

  1. Check Material Settings:
  • Ensure your material settings, especially the Roughness and Metallic values, are set correctly. Dark reflections can be a result of incorrect material properties. Adjust the Roughness and Metallic values in your material to achieve the desired level of reflectivity and roughness.
  1. Lighting and Environment:
  • Ensure that your scene has proper lighting and an environment that contributes to realistic reflections. You mentioned trying to put an HDRI map into the light, but also make sure that the overall lighting setup in your scene is appropriate.
  1. Reflection Capture:
  • Place reflection capture actors in your scene. These actors capture the surrounding environment and provide accurate reflections to your materials. Make sure you have set up reflection captures properly.
  1. Post-Processing:
  • Adjust post-processing settings to control the overall look of your scene. You can enhance or reduce reflections through post-processing settings, including Bloom, Ambient Occlusion, and Eye Adaptation.
  1. Check Normal Maps:
  • Verify that your normal maps are correctly imported and applied to your materials. Proper normal maps can significantly affect the way light interacts with the surface.
  1. Quality Settings:
  • Ensure that you have the appropriate quality reflections for your project settings. Higher-quality settings can result in more realistic reflections.
  1. Debugging:
  • Use the “Show > Visualize > Reflection Captures” option to visualize how reflections are calculated in your scene. This can help you identify areas where adjustments are needed.
  1. Check Your Substance Painter Export:
  • Review your Substance Painter export settings. Ensure you are exporting the necessary texture maps (e.g., base color, normal, roughness, metallic) and that they are set up correctly in Unreal Engine.

By following these steps, you should be able to improve the quality of reflections on your imported model in Unreal Engine. Remember that achieving realistic and accurate reflections can require a combination of material, lighting, and environment adjustments.

Long story short that epic will never admit to:

Metal display has been bugged since ue4.some rediculous early version from years ago.

Simply search the forum for “metal black” and have a laugh.

Your issue is nothing new, and probably something you can fix by creating your own material with a cuatom reflection if the intent is solely for rendering.

Otherwise even AA titles (because honestly in the last decade its hard to consider anything made with unreal an AAA title?) Partially live with this defect…

Re the HDRI - the metal system will offset the reflection of the map wierdly / at different angles.
Having a closed box hdri map driven environment doesn’t really cure the way that metals are displayed in engine - it is much better though, particularly for showcasing stuff and taking screenshots.

Btw, if your chief complaint is that the color is too dark, you can offset it a bit by increasing the skylight bounce.

There also used to be a way to do this specifically for relfections - just dont remeber where. It may be a setting within the material itself.
