Stylized VS Realism

v=s1BygaocQWA
To sum up my opinion on the topic, I prefer stylized because the visuals don’t age as badly, lower expectations of minor details, and because the developers artistic side can shine more, leading to some beautiful imagery. Bioshock infinite being one of my favorite examples. ^.^

What do you guys think?

Both games included in the video are unreal engine 4 btw.
I figured it would be interesting and fitting to do the argument in the same engine. XD

Interesting topic, but hard to compare a static tech demo with a stylised fast paced game. Imho, you can have also a mix of both, for instance with magic effects, which aim for realistic looks. The background here is that in past years with WoW, Blizzard created a ridiculous stylise everything trend, often copied in every detail, especially the effects, asset proportions, and characters.

I personally prefer games with realistic looking proportions and less blink blink entire screen is full of special effects (i.e. Diablo 3).

Yeah it was tricky coming up with examples. Know any that would have fit better? Im curious to see what games others present for the argument. XD
I thought about sticking to zelda games for the argument, but I wanted to try and be as universal as possible.

I need no realism for a game i like.
I like gaming very much and i own title like verdun or MG Phantom pain, but i still like to play settlers 2 and Creeper world for example.
When things are realistic in a game i often look at them and compare to realworld, only to see that its not 100% realistic.
When it comes to making games, realism multiplies the amount of needed time, for every piece of the game.
There are so many titles out there, which are targeting realism, but fail miserable and ruin the whole game idea.
Ziggurat is a good example of well done antirealism i think. Doom 3 a bad one for realism, for very high performance costs, compared to doom 2.
All these polished refurbished game ideas are boring me, and want me to buy only fat new hardware to play them. Only to get bored quick.
But only my 55cents.

All the older games for the most part, are not really comparable, due to technical limitations. Instead we have to compare specific game aspects, like model or effect style. Another special game category are simulators, which try to mimic realism as best as possible.

I find it depends on the game. I normally equate stylized to more humorous type of games … like Team Fortress and tend to stick with realistic for more … ummm … serious and realistic games.

Having said that … there are plenty out there would disagree with me. Currently I have two projects I am working on (just for kicks) that are both FPS games using Generic Shooter from Allar and the one is stylized and called Project 42 … the other is more serious and called Re-Spawn.

They are very similar concepts but the one is more humorous (stylised) and I have used similar characters to the TF ones (built in Fuse). The idea is to Steam Greenlight both and see what comes of it … before then however I will release them both on IndieDB during the development process and see what the interest is like.

Basically I will add a feature to the one and then replicate the feature in the other … as I said an experiment and learning experience.

+1 for that
I personally like realism, because then you feel like you are more in the game (as you can see the same things in the real world).

Like Luft said I need no realism to like a game. I do perfer it to be as real as possible when I go deeper in to a game. Example. Guns n Zombies is a good game, enjoyable. I am tring to make a realistic game so. I used to paint with acrylics example https://images.search.yahoo/yhs/search;_ylt=A0LEVjoy2hlW69gAzqAPxQt.;_ylu=X3oDMTByMjB0aG5zBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzYw--?p=Acrylic+Realism+Painting&fr=yhs-avg-fh_lsonsw&hspart=avg&hsimp=yhs-fh_lsonsw.

Notice the crome pic etc. gifted people. This is what I am trying to put into unreal. Like the guy said in the video. Cpu dependant. I got a rampage exterme 3 8gb ram I7 960 sux.
But I done some realistic rocks and grass. look in the community tool area I place some free to see if they do look real.

What we like doesn’t matter much. Technology will always keep pushing. After VR fails (again), to keep the wheel spinning tech providers will focus back into real time raytracing technology until we have low cost hardware able to run it 30fps.
Than the Vr hype train comes back, and circles, etc…

LOL well said. Like this movie

I like them both. I like realism because it can show you just how high quality graphics can be at present and how realistic they will become in the future. I like stylised because of the artistic exaggeration in shapes used to build character and also all the awesome hand-painted texturing and colour.

I agree. As an artist I find it most difficult expressing real life. As in Far cry those guys took a lesser approch and used shadows etc and made a game as close as real. I found myself getting immersed.

Personally i like realism way more than stylized i hate stylized games.
