Stop Outliner from auto-expanding folders

It’s very annoying and bad UI design to have the folders constantly open if you so much as look at an asset. I regularly have to do a ‘collapse all’ just so I can see what’s going on in my outliner.

Mentioned here, has lots of support and, as far as I can see has been ignored:

People have been asking for this for 10 years now, its crazy that such an overlooked feature is still missing

I agree, this is pointless. I think auto-expand should be banned from the universe. Unless it’s optional, it’s pure torture; you’d have to be someone who’s never dealt with such things to not see that..

Just adding my voice to this, please add the option to disable auto expand.

Edit: should’ve googled harder. In one of the 5.x+ versions they added an Outliner option to disable “Always frame selection”, as well as “Collapse hierarchy on viewport selection” - some combination of these should do the trick

I have built BetterOutliner with padlock that locks your folder permanently and saves persistence forever on each project, currently available Windows 5.5 to 5.8, FAB team currently reviewing 5.4 and 5.3. So, 5.2-5.1 should be done by end of week. After that another two to three weeks form Linux and few more for macOS.

It takes quite some time to port to more versions as I do rigorous tests, 8 hour c++ script macro test (moving stuff, collapsing, smokes etc) + 1 hour test mysself on each version to make sure it’s up to standard.

Please see the plugin here: BetterOutliner | Fab
