Static Mesh pixel paint

I know UE4 has vertex color painting tools, but is there any reason why the developers at Unreal Engine has never made it possible to pixel paint, not vertex paint, but actually painting pixels directly on a static mesh? As a matter of fact, Unity use too have it, but it has been removed after they switched to node base shaders, or at least the plugin do does not work anymore.

I think this would save time by giving game developers the ability to see their end results, without the need of flipping back and forth between UE4 and a 3d painting software. It is so frustrating, to continuously switch back and forth between a 3d painting application, like Blender, and then it looks like crap in UE4.
