Starting, Saving, and Re-Opening Projects

I know this topic is mentioned numerous times with different situations and concerns. Newbie here and teaching myself UE5. I created a new Project… I think… and within the Project a new Level… I think. I’m able to add elements to the Project / Level and import materials and other Quixel items. No issue there. I work and create a wonderful scene. I save Level and Save All along the way and the Program does it’s AutoSave as well… I see the little box in lower right corner of screen all the time while working. I’ve had this issue almost all the time recently, didn’t seem to happen early on (might be related to how I’m starting this Project). At the end of the day, if I close the Project / Program, and the next day I re-open that same Project, everything from previous day is gone. Even with all the save Levels and Save All during at the end of the session.

Researching the issue online and in the Forum, I find answers about looking for the Autosave folder (which I can find) and transferring the .umap and .uasset files (which there are many, so I look for the most current by date and time) and copy that file over into the Content folder… per some instructions, I simplified this response, because I’m sure most of you know what I’m talking about per other threads. No matter what I try, I can’t get the previous work to re-appear.

I also saw a post about setting the Startup Map in Project Settings to the one used to create the project, but I saw this post after working on my new Project / Level. I went ahead and changed the “Editor Startup Map”, “Game Default Map”, “Transition Map”, and Server Default Map" to what I think is the same Level my Level in my Project is called. Might be that I only needed to change the one, but changed the other three. Still working on Project, still saving Level and Save All.

I don’t want to shut down the Project because I don’t want to lose my current work. Just need to common sense direction to get me to a point where I don’t lose my work. Also, I’m afraid to do a Build because I think that also made me lose everything I had worked on prior to the Build… Wow! this is a complicated Program. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry for the long winded remark. Just trying to explain where I’m coming from.

The default folder the system looks at when you want to open levels, may not be the same folder you made your level in.

To find all levels, go to the top folder in the content browser and set the filter type to ‘level’

Then you can type part of the name of the level you’re looking for

I can find what you are mentioning, but that seems only to “filter” out the levels I’m working with in this project. When I lost all my work, I had “Save Current Level” from File pulldown, then I picked on “Save All”, also from File pull down. Then when I went back to reopen the file / project / level, it reverted back to what I started with in the beginning.

So, where are the “Save Current Level” files going on my computer when I save them myself or when the program does it’s AutoSave? Guessing it is in the folder where you can find the “.uproject” file… if that is the case, you would think that when you close down the program and computer, and when you start up the computer and re-open the program and then pick on the project (*.uproject" you would think it would open everything you worked on up to that point and saved during the last session.

Now, this might be where the “Startup Map” option described above might come into play.

It will always open the default map, which is typically the demo map.

They will be in the folder you were working in at the time. Quite often, this is under the first / third person related items. You can find them using the filter in the content browser.

It you want the editor to automatically open your map, you need to set the default editor level in the project settings.

Wow, where are you located to be responding so late for me. When you say the Demo map, are you saying the very first project / level I started with, which was a typical UE5 starting file… pretty sure this one was a “checkered” flat ground plane with mountains off in the distance surrounding the flat area. I pretty much deleted all those elements and started from scratch building my environment. I can show you screen shots that I did from the beginning. Not sure if you have time to deal with me and my silly “beginner” issues???

I’m in the Netherlands.

It’s is difficult to describe this stuff from a distance. But if you start a new map, make changes and save it, when you re-open the editor later, you will be back in the default demo map.

You then have to find your map in the content browser.

Only two ways to avoid this

  1. Edit the default map

  2. Change the default edtior map in the project settings
