Starting out with SpeedTree

This might be a really stupid question (and might be in the wrong place) but I have just gotten back into more detailed development with UE4 after taking a break from UDK for a while and I am having a bit of an issue.

Back in the days of UDK, I thought SpeedTree was a separate application that was installed with the Unreal Development Kit that had a designated button for launching it (it’s been so long I honestly can’t remember). Embarrassingly, I have spent almost 2 hours searching my computer (and searching Google) for where the SpeedTree modeler application is located and/or how you access it. It says on Unreal’s website and SpeedTree’s website that there is a version integrated with UE4 but I can not, FOR THE LIFE OF ME, figure out how to open SpeedTree.

I have already accepted that the solution is probably right in front of my face so if someone would be so kind as to explain it to me so I can face-palm and get on with my project I would really appreciate it.

I am running UE4 (v.4.13.0) if that information is applicable.

Thanks ahead of time,

Back in the UE3/UDK days Speedtree came with the editor despite being made by a separate company. With UE4 however, you need to purchase a license and download it from the creator’s website. UE4 only comes with support for importing and using SpeedTrees within it.

Ok! that makes more sense now. I guess I was reading it wrong. So it supports the models out of the box but the actual SpeedTree modeler has to be bought separately? Or is it also included with the Unreal Engine subscription of $19.99/month?

Thanks for the reply!

Assuming you’re on about the SpeedTree UE4 subscription from their website (as UE4 itself no longer has subscriptions) then that includes the modelling package, and also a monthly drop of a few trees from their library which you can use in your projects.

I think that is what I meant. Thanks for your help!

Have a look around for speed tree alternatives before you spend any money.

There’s a list of resources pinned at the top of this forum category.

Thanks. I don’t see any related to foliage but ill look around
