Stability and QOLs needed for EGL (List)

Short list on issues that I notice with EGL, on a European country:

  • Download speeds are half of my internet download rate (1gbps connection, max I ve seen is 400mbps download) on low traffic days, and it can go as low as 26mbps on high traffic days. (VPN from Cyprus to test). Other platforms utilize my full download speed, so its not an issue on my end.

  • There is no account to remember if you have more than one account in EGL. Switching is primitive, with notification after notification and manually inputting email and password like it’s the 90s. It would be nice to remember the account credentials if 2FA is enabled, or a quick switch option that allows you to log in to multiple accounts at the same time (for personal and business, for example, or within families)

  • Switching accounts sometimes shows the EPIC games logo, and EGL freezes or shows a connection error.

  • Switching accounts sometimes hides game tiles until you go to the Unreal Engine tab and back. This caused issues with me thinking I don’t have a game I should normally have (refer to JJ from UEFN DevRel on the issue)

  • Switching tabs in EGL feels really slow. Currently, it takes 4 seconds to switch tabs on a top-spec PC with 1Gbps connection. In my PS5, there is no waiting on any menu, and if there is, it’s clearly indicated by a loading screen. Switching tabs in EGL feels like the app breaks or freezes for a moment because there is no indication, and the waiting feels long.

  • All buttons in EGL feel unresponsive and clunky. They take a long time to respond, have no button feedback, and generally don’t give a good impression as UI/UX (no animations, no feel - yes, those matter, audience is gamers)

  • Game pages also take a lot of time to load. Something is slowing the page down.

  • Epic Player Ratings segment means nothing to me, as I can’t see any written reviews about the game, feels superficial. It’s also weird that ratings are in 5 stars, it needs to have more range to really space out games. In IMDB there is a difference between a 7.8 and an 8, and that’s double from the scale of 5 that we have here (mobile stores don’t matter, so we can’t compare, they all have the same ratings)

  • You have a section that’s only Fortnite News that’s close to the top. Is there no other news for other games? Feels forced even though I do develop in Fortnite myself.

  • The search store bar, which is probably one of the most used UI elements in Steam, has its interaction for the input in half the graphics’ scale, meaning if you click a little outside of the center, nothing happens. These things are small, but they stack together to create annoyance for players. Maybe assign a UX designer to do a pass on the entirety of the store for “feel”.

  • Had a case where I am downloading a game (opened downloads window and seeing the download happen) and the game tile in library says “Resume” instead of “pause” and maybe an animated download icon to show its actively downloading.

  • When closing apps, the launcher takes a significant amount of time to register them as closed, and when restarting apps for either crashes or development, this adds a lot of friction. Would love that when I close an app, the app status is instantly switched to be able to run it again, and remove this waiting time.

  • Bring back support for .exe files, or let UEFN and Fortnite run separately as before. This is incredibly useful for UEFN developers and both features were taken away after an update.

  • Would love a “force close” button for apps that are closed by the player but still appear as “running” in EGL (usually when there is an error on the app, it can stay open in the background and you cant relaunch it)

  • If EGL is a small window, all dropdowns have hidden options that cannot be accessed, like the profile menu dropdown. Scrolling in that menu does nothing too, so the lower options are hard to access, you have to instead make the window larger to see them.
