St Patrick's Cathedral

I’ve been working on a mixed-reality video project with some colleagues and made this (fairly accurate) reproduction of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland. A few Megascans props here and there but otherwise 95% modeled in Blender and built in UE5

I didn’t do the exteriors (yikes the inside took me a month!) Its a set for a sort of music video for a five-part percussion piece where my colleague (the musician) will be on stage playing one part live while video of him playing the other four parts will appear in this set and three others I’ve made: the Time Sq NYC subway station, an abandoned factory, and a tropical cave. Once we integrate the green screen I’ll probably post a few seconds of the final project. Thanks for the like and comment–My first time sharing

Greetings @Seanoskea !

@AntiGravity asked the very question I planned to ask, “Where is the video, bro?” :person_shrugging: LOL!

From what we can see in your screenshot, your recreation looks amazing and flawless! If your cathedral is any indication of how remarkable your work is, we don’t mind waiting to see the other sets in your final release! Thanks so much for sharing!

Wow what a nice comment, thanks made my day. Well the piece is 5 mins long x4 parts so my colleagues are rotoscoping and greenscreen removing 20 mins of video, but as soon as they are done we’ll put all the parts together. Maybe I’ll just upload some screenshots of the other sets. And what is there is “accurate” but I won’t say flawless. I dropped a lot of little details, like the little carved heads at the spring of every arch. Originally I was going to put all the monuments and graves along the side walls but once I hit the 40th hour or so I started “editing.” but the main architecture is roughly to scale. I found some architectural drawings in an online archive. That and Google Street view helped a lot. I’ve been to St. Pat’s years ago but I live in Oregon now so a little long distance.

Here’s a still of the subway with the video replacing Manny.

And here’s the cave and factory. Factory is about 50% original but the cave is basically a Lego project just assembling MS and Market assets. But still fun.

You’re most welcome, @Seanoskea !

Well, I meant flawless in that the lighting and architecture appears without flaw in your screenshot. Not flawless as in a 1:1 ratio to the real life structure. I dig your humility, though.

It’s awesome that you were able to see the cathedral in person! I’m always impressed with long-standing architecture! I believe I spend more time in old buildings admiring the ingenuity, art, and mathematics of a structure longer than most of my peers. Do you feel that being inside the cathedral gave you more of an edge in reconstructing it in UE?

The subway looks very accurate, but so incredibly clean! Where’s the grit, the trash, the random debris, the faded or heavily chipped paint, the graffiti, the gum stuck to the pavement? LOL! I kid!

I agree with you regarding the cave. I find that taking the assets and arranging them piecemeal like Legos makes for a more natural looking landscape. The light shining down into the cave will give your artist a natural spotlight to perform under. The factory looks sweet as well! (I would say more, but I don’t want to make this a TLDR reply) I’m now even more excited to see the video release!

Thanks again. Funny about the subway floor, (although in the reference photos they are surprisingly clean–I think they keep that one clean for the tourists) I turned off all the grunge decals 'cuz they were getting on the video plane. But then I found the “Receive Decals” check box! Changed my life. The grunge will be back! It was about 1995 when I was in St Patrick’s so I forgot to bring my I-phone and PolyCam
Thanks for all your great comments.
